G&WM Sustainability
Strategy workshop
8 A Sustainability Strategy workshop took place in October 2013 and was attended
by staff representing all parts of the Generation & Wholesale Markets business.
Speakers at the G&WM Sustainability Strategy workshop included (l-r) Duncan Clarke, Paddy Hayes,
Executive Director G&WM, Declan O'Brien and Colm de Búrca.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS workshop
was to present the ESB repositioned
Sustainability Strategy and to discuss
how G&WM can deliver on the objectives relevant to its business.
In his opening address Paddy
Hayes, Executive Director, reflected
on ESB's origins as a sustainable generation company with the development of Ardnacrusha, the significant
progress in delivering on our sustainability objectives since 2008 and emphasised that we must now focus on
thoroughly embedding sustainability
within our business plans and in the
way we work. He also acknowledged
the challenge that this may entail given the current reduced resources.
Following on from this Colm de
Búrca, Corporate Manager Safety and
Sustainability, presented the new ESB
Sustainability Strategy, emphasising
that it builds on the many successes of
the 2008-2012 programme.
Two further presentations were given by Duncan Clarke, G&WM Manager Environment and Sustainability,
and Rose Walsh, Civil, Building and
Three interactive workshop sessions were held during the day -
focused on delivering the strategy
objectives. At the event conclusion
it was agreed that each location
would consider the relevant sustainability objectives and the outcome of the workshops in preparing
their 2014 business plans. Thus the
2014 business plans for all parts of
G&WM will include sustainability
related actions and targets.
Environment, ESB International. The
former highlighted the work and successes to date within G&WM whilst
the latter provided an overview of the
new waste framework contract for the
generating stations.
Declan O'Brien, ESB Sustainability Committee Representative for
G&WM closed the event and thanked
everyone for his or her participation
in the day. Declan confirmed that a
high-level 2014 G&WM Sustainability
Action Plan will be developed based
on the sustainability items in the individual plans.
West Offaly Power achieves
2,000 days LTI-free
WEST OFFALY POWER recently
achieved 2,000 days without a Lost
Time Incident. Great credit is due to
all staff (both past and present) and
contractors for their contribution in
reaching this milestone. It is five and
a half years since the last LTI, which
occurred when a contractor was
struck by a piece of falling ash in the
boiler. Incidentally, West Offaly has
to go back seven years to November
2006 for the last LTI to a staff member.
While these records are a tribute
to the commitment of all to working
safely, West Offaly staff are aware
that there is no room for complacency. A day without a Lost Time Incident only occurs through a combination of vigilance, awareness and the
active involvement of everyone in
promoting a positive safety culture.
Well done to all for this achievement
and it is hoped that the station can
continue to build on this success going forward.

Book on history of Erne Hydroelectric
Scheme launched in Ballyshannon
ON NOVEMBER 9TH a history of
the Erne Hydroelectric Scheme was
launched at the Allingham Arts Festival in the Abbey Centre. Authors
of the book, Dessie Doyle and Brian
Drummond, detailed the story of the
families who built the scheme from
1946 to 1955. It recalls the relationship between the Irish Free State and
the Stormont Government over the
period of the scheme and outlines the
story of the 1,000 men who blasted
the rocks of Donegal and Fermanagh
to carve out two enormous dams that
redirected the mighty river Erne and
changed the landscape forever.
Dr Michael Kennedy, historian and
expert on the history of Irish Foreign
Policy, highlighted the fact that the
Erne Scheme was a model of effective
cross border cooperation. He complemented ESB for having the foresight
The authors Dessie Doyle and
Brian Drummond, both ESB staff,
thanked the company for sponsoring the publication. They dedicated
the book to all those past or present
who have worked on the construction or operation of the Scheme
and they hoped that this work
would open the door for further
research and publications on this
topic. They thanked their families
and all those who assisted with the
production of the book and singled
out for a special acknowledgment
the ESB Archive Team for their
hands on assistance, encouragement and support without whose
help the production of the book
would not have been possible.

Dublin Simon
During September the Central Procurement
team in G&WM Head Office turned their hand
to helping the Dublin Simon Community as part
of a team development day. The Dublin Simon
Community dubbed it as ' Room to Improve Day'
and in effect this translated into the cleaning of
four of the busiest rooms in their Capel Street
Centre in Dublin 1.

to develop and maintain a collection
of very valuable archival records,
which were used to produce this
publication including some selected
archival photographs of the highest
quality.
Pat Naughton, ESB Executive Director Group People and Sustainability, acknowledged all those associated with The Allingham Arts.
MC for the event was Plant Manger, Sinead Treanor while Conor
Carney, Chair of the Allingham
Arts Festival thanked those attending the book launch. Conor
commented on the enormous contribution that ESB and its staff have
made and continue to make to the
wider community and Ballyshannon in particular.
He stated: "It is also very appropriate for us all, but especially the
authors, to be launching this book
here today as their first publication
was titled 'Hugh Allingham Selected Works', which was published in
2007, and also because Dessie and
Brian are both steeped in the history of the Allinghams, the town of
Ballyshannon and of course ESB.
He concluded his remarks by congratulating both the authors and all
those involved in the production
of the book stating "perhaps the
greatest benefit of this very impressive publication is that the authors
have set out the situation during
the construction of the project as
it prevailed and they have left it to
the reader to make his or her own
judgement on what happened". n
WIND DEVELOPMENT PRESENTS
AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
8 Increasing wind turbine component size and more challenging locations for
projects, mean that transportation, logistics and heavy lifting operations must be
absolutely robust to ensure the safety of staff whilst avoiding delays to installation.
THE ANNUAL WIND Heavy Lift,
Transport and Logistics Conference
took place last month in London. The
conference was chaired by Sean Hegarty, Wind Construction Manager, Asset
Development and one of the papers delivered by Michael O'Grady, Health and
Safety Manager, Asset Development.
The Conference was attended by Project Developers, OEMs and Contractors
and a wide range of expert speakers
addressed many of the issues currently
topical within the wind industry - with
a particular focus on minimising costs
and delay during the movement and installation of large components.
Mick's paper, which was jointly delivered with Paul Whelan of SSE, was entitled 'Sharing Best Practice To Improve
Health and Safety Performance In The
Onshore Wind Industry'. The presentation focused very much on the behav-
ioural aspects of safety - borrowing on
many of the concepts from our own
behaviour-based safety approach to
managing safety on wind and thermal
construction projects. This presentation
was very well received with questions
afterwards having to be curtailed by the
Chair, such was the level of interest in
the topic. It was clear that ESB and SSE
are thought-leaders within our industry
in this arena. n
