Alex Keogh retirement
Alex pictured with his daughter Aoife and his wife Maura.
ALEX HAD 49 years and 290 days
service when he retired recently, which
is some achievement! He worked in
various parts of ESB, and only recently
(28 years ago!) joined Facilities in Head
Office, where he remained until his retirement.
There was a huge turnout for his retirement 'do' in Scruffy Murphy's, a testament to how well liked and respected
Alex was in the job he undertook as
Team Leader, looking after the maintenance of the full Head Office Estate.
Alex now starts on the next phase
of this life, having time to pursue
some old hobbies and also some new
ones recently taken up. We all wish
Alex, his wife Maura, and their family, continued health and happiness in
the future. n

CONGRATULATIONS TO Siobhan Gallagher who recently came
second in Ireland (650 candidates)
and tenth in world (25,000 candidates) in one of her ACCA accounting exams. The exam subject
was Governance, Risk and Ethics.
Siobhan is very appropriately
currently working in the governance team in G&WM with Marion
Quane. Donal Flynn, Executive
Director Finance and Commercial
presented Siobhan with an award
for her excellent results.
Siobhan is a member of the
ESB Accounting Graduate Programme, under which ESB has
taken on a small number of graduates over the last few years. During their three-year contracts the
trainees rotate through a number
of areas of finance, gaining broad
experience while they complete
their accounting traineeships and
exams. The programme is coordinated by Ian Riordan, BSC and
sponsored by Shana Dillon, Manager Finance Operations. Finance
Operations was established as a
new service line in BSC in 2012
and it provides a range of finance

EmPower
8 Electric Ireland's strategic objective is to be the foremost supplier of energy
and related services in the Irish market offering competitive and sustainable
energy solutions.
Members of the EmPower project teams based in Electric Ireland.
AGGRESSIVE LEVELS OF competition in the market and the economic
downturn have presented significant
challenges for the business in terms of
profitability, customer retention and
debt management. A new project delivery model has been implemented to
allow Electric Ireland compete effectively in the competitive market, under
the banner 'EmPower'.
What is EmPower?
The EmPower programme was developed to empower Electric Ireland
deliver on its brand promise through
successfully delivering change within
the organisation - integrating, innovating and transforming the operation of the business - introducing new
customer focused processes, technology systems, and analytical capabilities. The working title for the suite of
projects that make up this transformation programme is 'EmPower'.
Together, the projects in EmPower
will enable us to better understand
our customers and share knowledge
throughout Electric Ireland.
The vision of EmPower is that in
every interaction with our customers:
* we will know of their previous interactions across all channels
* we will have a consistent agreed
targeted message that we wish to
deliver to that particular customer
* we will learn from every engagement with our customers how we
can improve how we serve them
and adapt accordingly
* we will deliver on our excellent customer service promise by meeting
or exceeding customers expectations in a cost effective manner
EmPower people
There are approximately 90 people
working on the various EmPower projects. EmPower aims to maximise the
collaborative power of our teams to
ensure fast decision making and ease of
issue resolution. EmPower is located on
the ground floor of Swift Square, which:
* allows Electric Ireland business to interact with delivery teams face to face.
* allows staff at all levels to pop in and
see progress.
* ensures issues can be talked about
quickly within a project, between projects, and from project to the Electric
Ireland business.
Projects in an agile environment
The EmPower projects in themselves are
challenging - but we must also operate in
tandem with a fast moving, agile, competitive business. In order to manage the
cohesive running of EmPower alongside
the Electric Ireland business, we prioritise communication and collaboration.
Key success factors to date have been:
* The programme board is comprised
of the all of the members of Electric Ireland's SMT plus a member of ITS SMTas
the senior supplier representative.
* We operate a single governance, project management and reporting model
across our EmPower and business projects assisted and guided by the PMO in
ITS.
* We have combined fortnightly meetings with Electric Ireland middle management.
* We have weekly Solutions Architecture meetings where we ensure any
change is impacted and a co-ordinated
implementation strategy recommended
to the relevant governance body
* Regular formal staff communication
via monthly reporting packs, breakfast
briefings, use of TV screens, Lync and
email updates.
* Informal communications - our EmPower Olympics were highly successful!
* Monthly meetings with our key delivery partner, ITS to ensure plans are coordinated across the Electric Ireland and
ITS organisations.
Culture of continuous improvement
Finally, EmPower promotes continuous
learning and improvement, constantly
refining our processes, communications
and modus operandi.
To date in 2013, we have had a number
of key achievements:
* SEPA compliance for our full residential customer base.
* New online switch application
launched to enable customers to change
price plan/switch to Electric Ireland more
easily.
* Moved all I&C billing to our printing
outsource provider.
* Customer Facing Agent system design
phase completed in September. n
As get ready to move into 2014, we have learnt to put
more effort into communication at many levels - we
