We also found that it was critical to educators that student information displays how they would perform on state summative tests, as well as any relevant comparative data. And just as important is indicating the areas that educators should focus their instruction for the student. So in April we introduced a new interactive report in our MAP application called the Student Profile Report. It quickly lets you see how the student is growing, as well as what the student needs next to support continued growth. But it doesn't just stop there. The report also makes it faster and easier than ever to use data to differentiate instruction. Overall, the student profile report aims to provide fast, real-time access to data and make it easy to navigate. A second report is the Achievement Status and Growth Quadrant, also called The Quadrant Report. By leveraging national growth and status percentiles from our 2015 normative study, this report enables teachers to quickly visualize and compare students' growth and achievement. We can see information about each student-everything from their achievement levels, to national percentiles on each test, to how much they grew and how this growth compares to our national growth norms. This individual student data is often used in goal-setting conversations. Andy Hegedus: As we worked with users of our assessment, and as we used data ourselves to help improve schools, we recognized that if we provided solutions to some consistent issues, then we would make a world of difference for people. For example, many school systems don't have statisticians or deeply experienced data analysts, nor do they have bandwidth to create robust reports that provide real insights into the academic performance of the students they serve. If they do, typically the analyses aren't in simple language and easy to share with their board, parents, staff and community. Once they have some high-level insights, the next step is to dive into data to learn more about where the strengths and issues are so that focused conversations about perfor- ANDY HEGEDUS Senior Research Manager NWEA mance can occur. This dive needs to be easy to make. It needs to be very visual with easy ways to manipulate the data. And the outcome of this work must yield meaningful insights that warrant further investigation. You can think of our high-level summary report as being similar to a business's annual report. Our MAP Insights report is designed to give leadership a tool to easily understand their district's performance in key areas and easily communicate it to their constituents. Early in the report we provide a one-page executive summary highlighting three key areas: How are students performing? How are students doing compared to state proficiency and college readiness benchmarks? And how are you doing over time? Later in the report, each of these topics, as well as many others, are addressed in more detail page by page. There's not only text, but also simple graphics to support the analysis. MAP Growth Insights is an online interactive report that allows you to disaggregate your data with a few clicks and see the visualizations instantly change based on your selections. This visualization would allow you to dive into your data by just one school's third-grade students in math, or students grouped in achievement bands with how they compare to national growth norms. This may make you believe, for example, that your RTI program is working well while you may need to investigate your gifted and talented program further. With our MAP Similar Schools insights, we provide that same interactivity, but the comparisons are made between similar students who are educated in similar schools. When comparisons are apples-to-apples, people know what is possible. Conversations can focus on individual students, on grade levels, as part of one-on-one conversations, or as part of a school improvement process. We believe the combination of reports-starting with a student profile, and including everything through the district level and the MAP Insights suite-significantly improves the insights that school and district leaders have about district and school performance. Hopefully these improve your ability to communicate effectively to all your constituents and help you focus your improvement efforts on areas where you will make a real difference for the students you serve.
