power perspective Voltage Level Translator complies with SD 3.0 storage and speeds Single-Chip ICs for SSDs have DC/DC converters and buck regulators DC/DC µModule Converters are suitable for high vibration applications laimed to be the industry’s first voltage-level translator compliant with the latest SD (Secure Digital) 3.0 standard, the ST6G3244 is from STMicroelectronics. The increase in storage capacity and access speed of the standard, together with the low static power consumption and small package size the level translator, makes it suitable for interfacing application processors or digital basebands to SD memory cards in mobile phones, portable media players, tablets, digital cameras or personal navigation devices. The specification provides up to 2Terabytes of storage capacity and accelerates SD interface read/write speeds to 50Mbyte/s, at 50MHz DDR. The translator’s high-speed operation with very low power dissipation is supported with the power-down mode. Data integrity is secured through balanced propagation delays and EMI filters and signal conditioning. Recommended for portable devices that connect directly to the external memory card, the device incorporates 15kV air-gap electrostatic discharge protection on the card side. The selectable-supply (1.8 or 2.9V), 6bit, bi-directional CMOS-level translator for SD, mini-SD and micro-SD memory cards is offered in a BGA25 package, reducing board area by more than 50% over the company’s ST6G3238. STMicroelecTronicS 56 C T exas Instruments has introduced three single-chip, PMICs (power management ICs) for powering the supply rails in SSDs, and hybrid drives. The PMICs integrate three programmable 2.25MHz DC/DC step-down converters that support core processor, memory and I/O voltages, along with a 3V, 250mA low-dropout regulator for host controller reference. Each PMIC functions co-operatively with a controller IC to optimise the supply voltage for low power conditions and features a deep sleep mode that reduces application specific IC voltage and turns off the flash and I/O rails, according to the company. The PMICs integrate three SPI- programmable buck regulators with internal FETs. They feature current limit, thermal and power data protection. The LM10504 and LM10506 PMICs are suitable for space-constrained SSDs including micro SATA, half-slim SATA, mini PCIe and integrated SSD. They are available in a 34pin micro surface mount device package measuring 2.8x2.8mm with 0.4mm pitch. The LM10504 PMIC is also suitable for 3.5, 2.5 and 1.8inch SSD form factors. The 2A LM10503 PMIC is suitable for power-hungry controllers used in enterprise SSDs. It features the company’s National PowerWise adaptive voltage scaling technology for reducing the power consumption of SSD controllers. It is available in a 36pin leadless leadframe package, which measures 6x6mm. L inear Technology has introduced two 1.5W output DC/DC µModule converters with a 725V DC galvanic isolation. All components of the converters, including the transformer, control circuitry and power switches are available in an enclosed BGA package which provide sound interconnections in high vibration applications, says the company. The converters break ground loops in applications such as industrial, avionics and instrumentation equipment. The converters operate from an input voltage of 3.1 to 32V, and the LTM8047 and LTM8048 deliver regulated output voltage on the secondary side, adjustable from 2.5 to 12V and 1.2 to 12V, respectively. According to the company, the LTM8048 includes a low noise, isolated linear post regulator that reduces the output ripple noise to 20µVrms at 300mA and delivers an output voltage accuracy of 2.5%. The low noise performance of the low dropout regulator delivers a clean supply rail and enhances the performance of high accuracy, mixed signal converters, claims the company. Additional features that are available on both devices are over-current protection and adjustable soft start. The converters are available in three junction temperature grades, E and I operating in temperatures ranging from -40 and +125°C, and MP grade operating between -55 and +125°C. The BGA packages measure 9x11.25x4.92mm. www.epn-online.com/search?search_keyword=47087 April 2012 – epn issue n° 04 TexAS inSTruMenTS www.epn-online.com/search?search_keyword=46747 lineAr Technology www.epn-online.com/search?search_keyword=46749 http://www.epn-online.com/search?search_keyword=47087 http://www.epn-online.com/search?search_keyword=46747 http://www.epn-online.com/search?search_keyword=46749
