feature Sustainability and Media The Strategic Sustainable Solutions Zone debuted at the 2013 SGIA Expo (Orlando, October 23 -25). One of the more intriguing exhibits focused on sustainable media offered for use within the imaging industry. SGI A has long supported the environmental marketing concepts as set by the Federal Trade Commission in their Green Guides to Marketing. Such media products offered for use by the imaging communit y va r y. W hile t here a re single attribute certification programs for certain types of media, not all carry a valid third-party certification. Paperboard products often carry the credentials of the FSC, SFI or PEFC certification programs. These single attribute paper certif ications lend credibility to both the manufacturer of the paperboard product, as well as the imaging company, that their paper-based substrate products come from well-managed forests that provide environmental, socia l a nd economic benef it s. For plastics and vinyls, there are a variety of products used in the market space that claim biodegradability as an environmental trait. The Federal Trade Commission, in their recent release of the updated Green Guides to Marketing, offers guidance to both substrate manufacturers as well as users of these media products. Any claims made should be substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence that the entire product or package will completely break down and return to nature, i.e., decompose into elements found in nature within a reasonably short period of time after customary disposal. If entering the solid waste stream, claims cannot be made unless the item completely decomposes within one year of customary disposal. Additionally, many of our media, including fabrics, paperboard, plastics and vinyls, can claim to be REACH compliant. This claim can be easily subst a nt iated a s t he Eu rope a n Union clea rly sets the pa ra meters re g a rd i n g c hem ic a l s of c onc er n. Finally, the majority of the plastics and vinyls used by imaging companies can be recycled. The integration of a strong recycling program on the part of an imaging firm can not only have a positive impact by reducing operational costs, but can also significantly reduce a f irm's env ironmenta l footprint. SGIA reached out to four manufacturers and asked for their input about use of alternatives as well as validation of claims. The Federal Trade Commission offers guidance to both substrate manufacturers as well as users of these media products. Any claims made should be substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence that the entire product or package will completely break down and return to nature. Marcia Y.
