Scheduling specific times for each client means that any unexpected hurdle can delay all of your deliveries. The two-hour window not only diminishes unnecessary panicking, but also allows for multiple cakes to be delivered in one trip, on time and affordable. Not to mention, grouping deliveries will reduce time that your staff members spend outside the bakery when they could be assisting with production. Last-minute rushing can result in unsafe driving and delivery mistakes. It’s simply a risk not worth taking. At least two people should be involved in the delivery. Having a reliable navigator will remove a great deal of stress from the driver and better ensure the safety of the products. While it might seem necessary for an employee to guard the products in the back, that might not be productive. “There’s always some guy in the back watching the cake, trying to keep it from falling. What exactly is he going to do if it actually starts to fall? He can’t grab the thing. He’s going to destroy it if he does,” says Scott Chapin, owner of CakeSafe in Wakefield, RI. There’s an art to transporting your bakery’s cakes from point A to point B without destroying tedious designs that took hours to apply. A minor stumble, a hidden pothole or traffic during a hot summer all lead to a delivery catastrophe worthy of slapstick comedy. Even so, there are a handful of simple precautions that can dramatically reduce instances of minor or irreparable product damage. With that in mind, the precautions should start as soon as you schedule the date and time of the delivery. Perfect timing Most delivery nightmares consist of airborne cakes or the screeching breaks of the bakery’s van. On the other hand, the combination of poor timing and nasty weather are your worst enemies. If you want your deliveries to remain punctual, profitable and stress-free, don’t schedule deliveries for exact arrival times. Ask customers for a two-hour window for delivery, assign higher rates during rush hour and attempt to make multiple deliveries during each trip.
