El Pueblo Bakery
While it is common to see customers at a panadería
pick up a tray to select their own products from bakery
display cases, El Pueblo Bakery prides itself on doing it
differently. Here, staff behind the counter greet every
customer and ask what they can get for them today. Each
order is collected by the counter staff.
"We want our customers to feel like they are being
served," says Norma Flores, who owns El Pueblo with
her husband, Jose. "We always wanted to have a small
business. For me, it was my dream."
Such a strong commitment to customer service matters
greatly to the success of El Pueblo, which opened 12
years ago in Reno, Nevada. Norma Flores previously
had worked in the fields of Salinas, California, where her
uncle owns a bakery. Then her two sisters started working
at her uncle's bakery, and they wound up marrying two
brothers who were bakers there.
Norma Flores smiles when she tells the story because
she knows how life can take curious turns sometimes and
lead you in a direction that you wanted to go. She had
always wanted a family business, and now she started to
dream of someday owing a bakery.
"I'd like to thank my brother-in-law, Juan Martinez,
who was the head baker at my uncle's bakery in Salinas,"
Norma Flores says. "That's how we developed our baking
style here at El Pueblo. I love the flavors of his recipes."
Norma and Jose's son, Jose Flores Jr., is 24 years old
and works full time as a baker at the family business.
