BAKING INDUSTRY FORUM

BEMA knows two heads are better
than one, so it created a channel for
idea-sharing to grow the industry.

he Baking Industry Forum (BIF) was established to
bring together engineering and operations leadership
from medium and large baking companies in an open
forum to discuss issues affecting them and the baking industry as a whole.
BIF's overall goal is to create a stronger alliance between
the baker and supplier through better communication and
a coordinated emphasis on key issues facing the industry.
Anyone from the industry can suggest topics for study and
discussion, and summaries of the BIF meetings are communicated widely to the industry. The result is a network of suppliers and bakers who are more attuned to providing products and services that meet or exceed all expectations.
Rich Hoskins III, CEO, Colborne Foodbotics, and Jim
Kline, president of The EnSol Group, were the original founding members in 2006 with a small group of four bakers and
four suppliers. BIF has grown in both size and impact over
the years, now rostering a robust team of 18 industry leadHUV7KHLUHႇRUWVDUHIRFXVHGRQHQJDJLQJWKHPHPEHUVKLS
in timely and relevant topics they can use in their own daily
operations. The key objectives of the forum have remained:
Identify and share best practices, identify new product or service opportunities, open the avenues of communication, and

Over the years BIF has covered topics such as factory
acceptance testing, project lifecycle, veterans in the workSODFH HQHUJ\ HႈFLHQF\ DUF ÀDVK LQYHQWRU\ DQG ZDUUDQW\
VDIHW\FKHFNOLVWVDQGFHUWL¿FDWLRQDFURQ\PV'XULQJWKH
BEMA Convention, BIF members demonstrated hands-on
allergen swabbing. At the 2018 Convention, they will discuss
WKHFXOWXUHRIOHDQPDQXIDFWXULQJLQFOXGLQJVSHFL¿F
strategies such as 5S.
BIF requires new members from BEMA
annually. At the summer convention, a
request for application to participate in
WKHIRUXPLVRႇHUHGWRDOOPHPEHUVLQ
good standing. A sub-committee from
the board of directors makes recommendations to the executive commitWHH IRU ¿QDO DSSURYDO &DUH LV WDNHQ WR
ensure that all segments of the industry
are represented in BIF.
