FDA goal? Remove artificial trans fats

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) believes partially
hydrogenated oils (PHOs) no longer belong on the list of ingredients Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). The agency published a Federal Register notice to that effect with the goal of removing artificial trans fats from processed foods.
Once the preliminary determination is finalized, PHOs would
become food additives subject to premarket approval by the agency. Foods containing unapproved food additives are considered
adulterated under US law, meaning they cannot be sold legally.
"If FDA determines that PHOs are not GRAS, it could, in effect, mean the end of artificial, industrially-produced trans fat in
foods," said Dennis M. Keefe, PhD, director of FDA's Office of
Food Additive Safety. "FDA is soliciting comments on how such
an action would impact small businesses and how to ensure a
smooth transition if a final determination is issued."
FDA has the authority to act when it believes an ingredient is,
in fact, not GRAS, and that's what the agency said its preliminary
determination is doing now with PHOs. A Federal Register notice
was published Nov. 8 announcing the preliminary determination
that PHOs are not GRAS, which included the opening of a 60-day
public comment period.

Bob's Red Mill to expand operations

Bob's Red Mill, Milwaukie, OR, will expand its production
and distribution facilities. The company will open its World
Distribution Center in January near its headquarters. It secured
a 125,000-sq-ft facility and will move storage and distribution to
the new building.
The available space at the headquarters will be used to expand
production of whole grain and gluten-free foods. More than 80
gluten-free flours, cereals, baking mixes and grains are made in
a dedicated 100% gluten-free facility, and the expansion will add
another 70,000 sq ft of production and packaging space, more
than tripling its current size.

TIC GUMS opens
Brass Mill center
TIC Gums, Belcamp, MD, opened a Brass Mill operations
center near its Richlynn, MD, operations center in October.
It now operates three facilities in Maryland.
The nearly 200,000-sq-ft Brass Mill facility rests on 20
acres. This location will initially contain warehousing.
Future plans for the facility include investing in additional
manufacturing capabilities to support current production at
the Richlynn plant.

Aunt Millie's to distribute
Hostess items

Aunt Millie's Bakeries, Fort Wayne, IN, entered into a limited
distribution agreement with Hostess Brands LLC that will allow
that company to sell Hostess Twinkies, Ho Ho's and Cup Cakes
through direct-store delivery to convenience stores in certain
markets including Indiana; most of Illinois, including Chicago;
Milwaukee; and the northern parts of Kentucky where Aunt
Millie's currently has distribution. The program began in early
December.
Aunt Millie's will also continue to distribute the Snack Planet
line of sweet goods that the company launched in May.
