Nearly 25 years later, it has grown to be a successful company focused on creating good food and making a positive impact on the world. Because of this, the Clif Bar Family Foundation focuses on supporting small to mid-size nonprofits working hard to make a difference in the food system and local communities. "They do a lot with very little funding," said Thao Pham, vice-president of community, Clif Bar & Company, and executive director of the Clif Bar Family Foundation. "What they're doing is preserving the future for our society's next generation." The foundation awards grants to these small organizations to help them earn a salary, pay the rent or keep the lights on. "Not a lot of foundations fund that; it's usually restricted to specific projects," she noted. The foundation exercises extensive due diligence in vetting organizations and their causes, often conducting on-site visits, to ensure their values align with Clif Bar's. "The key philosophy when Gary [Erickson] and Kit [Crawford] put the foundation together is that we trust in the people who are running the organization," Ms. Pham explained. "If you believe in the mission and believe in the people who are running it, then you'll believe they'll be good stewards of your money." putting back out.
