PepsiCo throws down the healthy snacks gauntlet in Mexico P
By Francisco Redruello epsiCo is planning to invest some US$300 million in Mexico during 2012, according to a recent company announcement. The company will use this spending not only to enhance the health and wellness credentials of its Mexican product portfolio but also to export more of its products to other Latin American and Asian markets. Part of PepsiCo’s major initiative will fund a Center of Excellence for the production of healthier snacks worldwide. For example, the center will test and produce new Quaker cereal bar formulations that contain as much as 8 g of oatmeal and fewer than 100 Cal. Health and wellness remains at the forefront of PepsiCo’s growth strategy, both globally and locally in Mexico. It became one of the first packaged food firms in Mexico, for example, to withdraw highsugar and high-calorie snacks and soft drinks from schools last year to comply with phase one of an aggressive government-led public health initiative.

Economy fuels snack sales
Snack sales remain healthy in more ways than one. Retail growth for sweet and savory snacks in Mexico approached 8% in current value terms in 2011, thanks mainly to economic recovery and price increases across the category. That said, ongoing government campaigns promoting healthier lifestyles have constrained the category. Nevertheless, snack food manufacturers in Mexico can still use these initiatives to their advantage. Fruit snacks, for example, remain relatively new to Mexico, but thanks to mounting consumer health awareness and the category’s relative newness to the market, sales increased some 11% in 2011 in current value terms Continued on Page 6
