New Food Products Quiznos adds three concepts to menu The soft red winter DENVER — The quick-service chain Quiznos has added a pulled pork sandwich, salads and flatbread wraps to its menu. “Pulled pork has been rising in popularity recently and this trend represented an opportunity to further expand our chef-inspired menu offerings,” said Zach Calkins, senior vicepresident of culinary creation. “My tasting trips to Chicago, San Francisco and the American South served as culinary inspiration for Quiznos’ pulled pork subs and elevated the standard for quick-service flavor and taste. We’ve been developing these flavors over the past four months, and they are definitely ready for prime time.” In addition to the new pulled pork subs, Quiznos is introducing new whole grain flatbread wraps and fresh salads to its menu. “Our success at Quiznos has always come from listening to what our customers want and responding with our recipe-driven approach to menu innovation,” said Greg MacDonald, chief executive officer. “With the addition of our whole grain flatbread wraps and new Farmers’ Market Salads, we have tastes and unique recipes that are on trend with what our customers are purchasing at fine dining establishments, customized to deliver the value and quality for which Quiznos is known.” FBN wheat harvest expanded into the Central states. The Missouri harvest was 9% completed on June 12, behind 11% as the average for the date, and the Illinois harvest was 1% completed compared with 5% as the average. Forecast wet weather may make harvest progress slow. Flax USA introduces Flaxmilk GOODRICH, N.D. — Flax USA, Inc. has introduced Flaxmilk in half-gallon containers at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The new beverage is available in two flavors: original and vanilla. The company is promoting the health attributes of the new product, noting that several studies have found evidence that the consumption of flax on a daily basis may help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. An 8-oz serving of Flaxmilk is 50 calories, according to the company. “In addition to our full line of omega-3 flax products, including flax seed, flax oil and pet food, we were excited to be the first to produce 100% natural Flaxmilk so that consumers could enjoy a lactose-free, dairyfree, soy-free, gluten-free milk product derived from flax,” said Stephanie Stober, president and owner of Flax USA. Flaxmilk has a suggested retail price of $2.98. FBN June 21, 2011 FOODBUSINESS NEWS ® 51
