Nestle Health Science acquires stake in Vital Foods Vital Foods was established in 1991 and sells Kiwi Crush and Phloe, branded products that aid in promoting digestive health. Nestle said the acquisition gives it representation on the board of Vital Foods, which will provide the opportunity to help in future product development as well as commercial strategy. “We are excited to have Nestle Health Science as a strategic investor in Vital Foods,” said Gursh Bindra, chief executive officer of Vital Foods. “We look forward to working with Nestle Health Science to further develop our product range.” Terms of the transaction were not released. Nestle Health Science has made several recent investments. This past May the group acquired Prometheus Laboratories, San Diego. Prometheus specializes in diagnostics and specialty pharmaceuticals in gastroenterology and oncology. In February, the group acquired CM&D Pharma Ltd., London. CM&D Pharma focuses on the research and development of food products for special medical purposes. The company’s primary product is Fostrap, a chewing gum for kidney patients who have elevated levels of phosphate in their blood. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. FBN Kraft names Timothy Cofer to European leadership NORTHFIELD, ILL. — Kraft Foods has named Timothy P. Cofer as executive vice-president and president of Kraft Foods Europe. Mr. Cofer succeeds Michael A. Clarke, who is leaving the company. The change will take place mid-August. “Tim is a very talented and highly successful leader who can quickly transition into this role,” said Irene Rosenfeld, chairman and chief executive officer of Kraft Foods. “Tim has nearly 20 years with the company. He has experience in multiple categories and geographies, including intimate knowledge of our European and global chocolate businesses.” Mr. Cofer joined Kraft in 1992 and most recently was senior vice-president, global chocolate category team. He has a master’s in business administration from the University of Minnesota. FBN VEVEY, SWITZERLAND — Nestle Health Science has acquired a minority stake in Vital Foods. Vital Foods is based in New Zealand and develops kiwifruit-based products to help gastrointestinal conditions. “We are very pleased to have a stake in Vital Foods,” said Luis Cantarell, president and chief executive officer of Nestle Health Science. “Their products align strongly with Nestle Health Science’s commitment to science-based nutritional solutions for gastrointestinal health.” Gary Lane named c.e.o. of Ottens Flavors Hispanic consumers seek authentic menu options CHICAGO — Hispanic consumers place high importance on family dining options and the authenticity of Hispanic menu options, according to the “Hispanic foodservice consumer trend report” from Technomic. “Simply offering a Hispanic-inspired menu item is not enough to attract Hispanic consumers, as more than one third of the consumers in our study actually disagree that the mere presence of Hispanic menu items will encourage them to visit a restaurant,” said Sara Monnette, director of consumer relations for Technomic. “If restaurant operators want to drive additional traffic and build brand loyalty among this rapidly growing and influential consumer group, they must understand their unique needs. Preparing and presenting Hispanic cuisine in an authentic manner and providing a familyfriendly environment are two ways restaurant operators can build relationships with Hispanic consumers.” The Technomic report included an online survey of 1,000 acculturated Hispanic consumers and a telephone survey of 100 Hispanic consumers who were not acculturated. Among the acculturated consumers 35% said they have a high level of brand loyalty and that they like to visit familiar restaurants and tend to patronize the same few concepts whenever they go out to eat. Three in four acculturated Hispanic consumers said they purchased prepared foods at grocery stores once a month or more often. Nearly a third said they do so at least once a week. More than 40% of Hispanic consumers purchase food service options at convenience stores on a monthly basis. The availability of healthy options at both limited-service and fullservice restaurants is important to about twothirds of Hispanic consumers. One section in the Technomic report explored the differences between various Hispanic cuisines in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The section also explored how U.S. restaurant menus showcase Hispanic cuisines. The Hispanic demographic represents about $1 trillion of spending power in the United States, according to Technomic. Hispanic consumers comprise 16% of the U.S. population and that percentage is expected to reach 30% by 2050. FBN PHILADELPHIA — Gary Lane has been promoted to chief executive officer of Ottens Flavors, an international flavor supplier. Mr. Lane succeeds Richard Robinson, who had been Ottens’ c.e.o. since 1996. Mr. Robinson will remain chairman of the board and an adviser to Mr. Lane. Mr. Lane has more than 25 years of experience in the food, flavor and fragrance industries. Before his promotion, Mr. Lane was director of international operations and business development at the company. Before joining Ottens, Mr. Lane was a business unit director at Kerry Group. Before that he held a variety of executive and management positions at Quest International, a supplier of flavors, fragrances and food ingredients. FBN 12 FOODBUSINESS NEWS ® July 19, 2011
