Leucadia National to acquire stake in National Beef KANSAS CITY — Leucadia National Corp. has entered an agreement to acquire about 79% of the outstanding ownership interests in National Beef Packing Co. Based in New York City, Leucadia National is a diversified holding company engaged in a variety of businesses, including oil and gas drilling, gaming entertainment, medical product development and winery operations. With sales of $6.8 billion, National Beef Packing is a processor of beef and beef byproducts. U.S. Premium Beef L.L.C. is the majority owner in National Beef Packing. “This transaction will enable us to address the liquidity desires of U.S. Premium Beef’s diverse producer ownership base while maintaining our highly successful cattle supply system and a sizable investment in beef processing,” said Steve Hunt, chief executive officer of U.S. Premium Beef. FBN Falconhead Capital acquires Rita’s Water Ice Franchise NEW YORK — Falconhead Capital, L.L.C. has acquired a controlling stake in Rita’s Water Ice Franchise Co., L.L.C., a regional frozen treat concept based in Trevose, Pa. Rita’s was owned by an investment group led by Jim Rudolph, and he will retain a minority stake and has been named vicechairman. Thomas Christopoul, an operating partner at Falconhead, has been named chairman and interim chief executive officer for Rita’s. Rita’s has 550 franchise locations in 18 states and makes Italian Ice, which is a sweetened frozen dessert made with fruit or other natural or artificial food flavorings, similar to sorbet. FBN Blount buys Cape Cod Chowder Co. FALL RIVER, MASS. — Blount Fine Foods, a manufacturer of soups, dips, sauces and salads, has acquired the Cape Cod Chowder Co. Based in Marion, Mass., Cape Cod Chowder Co. is a regionally distributed manufacturer of fresh and frozen soups, dips and spreads. The company manufactures more than 50 different product varieties and sizes. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Blount said it plans to move soup production of the Cape Cod Chowder brand to its newly renovated soup plant in Warren, R.I. Production of the seafood dip and spread lines, which are sold under the Offshore Delight brand, will be moved to Blount’s Fall River facility, the company said.
