Coca-Cola steps up investments in India, Myanmar
ATLANTA — The Coca-Cola Co. has unveiled plans that would significantly increase its investment in India and also mark its entrance into Myanmar, also known as Burma. The company on June 26 announced plans to invest an additional $3 billion in India through 2020 for the continued development of the non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverage market. The new investment brings CocaCola’s total investment plans for India to $5 billion from 2012 through 2020. “Achieving continued sustainable, responsible growth in India is core to achieving our 2020 vision of doubling system revenues in this decade,” said Muhtar Kent, chairman and chief executive officer for Coca-Cola. “Our ongoing investment in India is focused on delivering innovation, partnerships and a portfolio that enhances the consumer experience, ensures product affordability and builds brand loyalty to deliver long-term growth.” Coca-Cola already has invested more than $2 billion in India since it re-entered with Pact, a non-governmental organization working to promote health, economic empowerment and food security in developing countries. The company plans to develop business in Myanmar after the U.S. government issues a general license allowing American companies to make investments. The company anticipates making significant investments in the country during the next three to five years with plans to establish local business relationships and work with local customer partners. Myanmar is currently one of three countries in the world where Coca-Cola doesn’t do business with the other two being Cuba and North Korea. FBN
