I.O.M.: No benefit in
sharp sodium cuts
WASHINGTON — New research from
the Institute of Medicine has found no
evidence to support recommendations
to significantly lower sodium intake below 2,300 mg per day for the general U.S.
population. Currently, American adults
consume an average of 3,400 mg per day,
the I.O.M. said.
The findings challenge the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which
include a goal of reducing dietary sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day among
certain large population subgroups
who may be at higher risk, including
African Americans, people 51 years of
age and older, and people who have

Allergens are top food
safety issue in 2012
ndeclared allergens, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) were the top three
food safety incidences reported to the
Food and Drug Administration during
2012, according to the agency’s third
Reportable Food Registry (R.F.R.) annual report. The report, published May
1, reviewed food safety incidence reports
filed with the R.F.R. between the dates
Sept. 8, 2011, to Sept. 7, 2012.
In the R.F.R. annual reports for 2010
and 2011, Salmonella ranked ahead of
undeclared allergens as the most reported food safety incidence.

Flavored milks: Sweetness

controversy as the current consideration to change the standard identity for
fluid milk to include approved zero-calorie
sweeteners as an option in sweetened
products. The current standard requires
processors to use special labeling such as

“reduced-calorie chocolate milk” for products made with non-nutritive sweeteners. If
non-nutritive sweeteners are added to the
list of standard ingredients for flavored milk,
the products wouldn’t require the front-label
description that dairy manufacturers have
deemed unattractive to some consumers.
A citizen’s petition was filed nearly four
years ago by the International Dairy Foods
Association and the National Milk Producers Federation to change the standard. In
February 2013, the F.D.A. published the petition in the Federal Register along with the
agency’s request for public comment. The
petition was and continues to be a direct attempt to keep flavored milks in school cafeterias, as federal agencies and consumer
groups continue to push for lower-calorie
milk and foods on school menus.
