July 30, 2013 FOODBUSINESS NEWS NEWS, MARKETS AND ANALYSIS FOR THE FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY www.foodbusinessnews.net Starbucks, Danone form global venture SEATTLE — The Starbucks Coffee Co. and Paris-based global dairy giant Danone have entered into an agreement to develop a line of Greek yogurt products that will be sold in Starbucks stores and the grocery channel in the United States, and, eventually, globally. The product line, which will be sold under the brand name Evolution Fresh, Inspired by Dannon, will be ready-to-eat parfait Greek yogurt products. Starbucks will offer the products in participating stores in the spring of 2014, and Danone will start distributing the products to U.S. retailers in 2015. With a portfolio of leading frozen pizza, pies and Asian appetizer products sold under brands such as Freschetta, Red Baron, Tony’s, Edwards and Pagoda Express, Mr. Waldron seeks to reinvigorate a category that has struggled during the past few years. “Getting the products right is one way to bring more people back to the frozen food aisle,” he said in an interview with Food Business News. “There have been a lot of new products in the category, but they tend to have been replacement innovations; they have not gained traction with consumers. “There is a lot of flavor variety, a lot of crust variety, but it’s replacement innovation and has created a lot of churn on the shelf.
