INGREDIENTMARKETTRENDS In The Spotlight At A Glance Ethanol fuels fireworks in the Iowa Republican caucus griculture is among the topics least discussed in national presidential campaigns, until those campaigns lead candidates to Iowa. The victor in the Iowa Republican caucus was Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, whose opposition to the Renewable Fuel Standard, the mechanism through which the federal government provides support to the nation's biofuel industry, long has raised the ire of ethanol manufacturers, corn grower organizations A for whom ethanol has become an essential outlet for their members' crops and their champions in Congress and the Iowa Capitol. Corn is the largest crop grown in the United States, and Iowa is the largest corn producer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast corn used in the Dairy product stocks Dec. 31, per cent change from year ago +14% manufacture of ethanol in 2015-16 at 5,200 million bus, which would account for 44% of total domestic corn use in the current crop year and 38% of all corn disappearance (including exports). Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, a Republican, ahead of the caucus urged Iowans not to support Senator Cruz because of his opposition to the R.F.S. Mr. Branstad told the Des Moines Register, "He (Mr. Cruz) actually introduced a bill in 2013 to immediately eliminate the R.F.S. He's heavily financed by Big Oil. So we think once Iowans realize that fact, they might find other things attractive, but he could be very damaging to our state." Bob Dinneen, president and chief executive officer, Renewable Fuel Association, noted. "The narrative coming out after last night's Iowa caucus that the domestic ethanol industry is somehow on the ropes is false. Many people seem to have forgotten that, in the run-up to last night's caucus vote, though Senator Cruz stated he was opposed to the R.F.S., he also expressed support for ethanol as a fuel." He attributed Senator Cruz's opposition to the R.F.S. to his opposition to federal mandates in general. "Moreover, pundits anxious to write off ethanol's potential currency in Iowa should note that more than 85% of the votes cast in Iowa last night were in support of candidates who continue to champion the R.F.S."
