Market commentary for one-week period ended September 30, 2016 Bakery Flour Mill grind across most of the nation was seasonally strong at about six days. FBN Bookings of bakery flour were limited last week. Prices advanced with the widest adjustments made to spring grades. The principal constraint on new business continued to be the well-covered status of most bakers. While it was expected bakers soon will become more proactive in filling remaining gaps in October-December flour coverage, this will take place more with the calendar in mind as opposed to out of concern prices may run up significantly anytime soon. Wheat futures remained range-bound, trading not far above contract and multiyear lows set on Aug. 31. While bakers earlier took extensive coverage of the futures component of flour contracts well into 2017 in cooperation with millers or on their own account, there were indications of additional such coverage taken last week. Outside this business, activity primarily involved individual bakers covering outstanding components, mostly basis or millfeed, to wrap up contracts for the fourth quarter. Bakers remained frustrated with millfeed prices they viewed as too low for the fourth quarter, but millers pointed to the record corn crop now being harvested and cautioned millfeed prices may remain low. There also was a carry in the cash basis that discouraged more assertive contracting by some bakers. Millers estimated about 65% of flour needs for the fourth quarter were covered with coverage for January-March 2017 estimated at about 30%. Carlot list prices were unchanged. No change in list pricing was anticipated with preparations for the fall baking season so advanced. Some branded product was offered on grocers' shelves at about $2.69 per 5-lb bag, but more active promotion was expected as the baking season approaches. It was expected branded product may be offered as low as $4 for two 5-lb bags once holiday demand begins to expand. Private label promotions may be more aggressive still. In the market for private label flour, grocers, club stores, mass merchandisers and other principal buyers earlier booked the flour supply they require through December, and many buyers have extended contract balances through March, which would help see them through Easter-related demand. FBN Semolina Bookings of semolina, granulars and durum flour were limited last week. Prices advanced. The price of choice milling hard amber durum as quoted at the Chicago gateway for delivery beyond was $8.50 a bu, up 25c from the previous week. The Minneapolis price was $8.20 a bu. Pasta manufacturers earlier covered nearly all of their semolina needs through the fourth quarter, and first-quarter coverage was estimated at about 30%. The U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated the North Dakota durum harvest was 92% completed by Sept. 25 compared with 95% last year and 87% as the recent five-year average for the date. The Montana harvest was 97% completed compared with 99% a year ago and 78% as the recent five-year average. Indications were the Canadian harvest was about 70% completed. Durum millers and pasta manufacturers awaited more details about the crop's quality. Ill-timed precipitation ahead of and around harvest time resulted in elevated levels of vomitoxin in a portion of the crop. The problem may be as bad or even worse in Canada, which was approaching the end of its large harvest. It was expected, given the large crops in both countries, there should be ample supply of good-quality durum available, but mills and other buyers may have to hike bids to draw it out. The U.S.D.A. on Sept. 30 estimated U.S. durum production in 2016 at 104 million bus, up 12 million bus, or 14% from the August forecast and up 24% from 84 million bus in 2015.
