"We have more flexibility to present
solutions to shoppers along their path to
purchase," Mr. O'Grady said. "This allows
us to better meet the consumer's needs
and build stronger consumer relationships with our brands."
In the United States, four retailers
are driving growth in grocery e-commerce and include Amazon, Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc., Instacart and Kroger Co. A
challenge for food manufacturers will
be to work with the leading retailers,
but the manufacturers also have the
flexibility to create partnerships and
solutions with emerging e-commerce
retail models.
"Our market share on-line is 20%
higher than it is in a physical store,"
Mr. O'Grady said. "This means that as
more shoppers transition on-line, we're
in an advantaged position. We're also
aggressively partnering with retailers to

meaningful innovation, both in snacks
and beverages, in order to address the
exploding growth of e-commerce."
Many of PepsiCo's products are impulse-buy oriented at brick and mortar,
but Ms. Nooyi sees potential in those
products achieving growth on-line.
"I think the whole e-commerce
area is going to be impulse as you see it
in a brick-and-mortar store, which then
translates to e-commerce, and it becomes
part of a replenishment cycle," she said.
"We've seen so many virtual reality tools
right now. You can actually simulate
grocery stores or whatever version of a
grocery store you want on-line. And you
can easily navigate the aisles, and just
with a click, shop for whatever you want.
So, I think in an interesting way, there's
infinite possibilities to create impulse all
