Sweeteners
Trading was slow last week. Prices
mostly were unchanged but with a fi rm
tone to refined beet sugar values. New
offers of sugar from Mexico were light.
Bulk refined beet sugar prices were
unchanged at 32c to 33.50c a lb f.o.b.
Midwest spot through Sept. 30, 2017.
Prices were firm with processors said
to be sold out for the current marketing
year. Indications were one processor was
oversold. A few fi ll-in sales were reported
as processors were able to sell supply that

buyers did not intend to take.
Offers for next year mostly were
around 32.5c a lb f.o.b. Midwest with sales
at that level also said to be light. Processors were comfortable with the amount of
prospective production sold for next year,
with some noting sales were ahead of the
average pace for the date. Brokers noted
processors were unwilling to negotiate or
lower 2017-18 offers.
U.S. Department of Agriculture state
sugar beet crop ratings were unchanged
or lower from a week earlier as of July 16,
except for Wyoming, where the crop was
rated 81% good and 19% fair compared
with 72% good and 28% fair the prior week.
While drought continued to plague central
and western North Dakota and much of
Montana, North Dakota maintained a
higher beet crop rating than did top-producing Minnesota, even though Minnesota
was not within the main drought area.
Good-to-excellent ratings were unchanged
from a week earlier in North Dakota at 83%,
but declined in Minnesota to 66% (68% the
prior week), with Michigan at 68% (70%),

Idaho at 91% (94%), Colorado at 83% (84%)
and Oregon at 58% good (64% good, none
excellent either week), state U.S.D.A. offices
said. Good-to-excellent ratings were down
from a year ago in all states except North
Dakota (83% this year, 65% last year) and
Colorado (83% both years). The largest drop
was in Minnesota (66% this year and 86%
last year).
Bulk refined cane sugar prices also
were unchanged last week. Refi ned cane
sugar continued to sell at 34c a lb f.o.b. in
the Southeast for both 2016-17 and 201718, around 36c a lb f.o.b. in the Northeast
and at 40c a lb and above delivered on the
West coast, all unchanged.
Louisiana sugar cane ratings improved with 81% of the crop rated good
to excellent as of July 16, up from 78% a
week earlier and compared with 82% last
year, the U.S.D.A. said.
New offers from Mexico were limited due to tight supplies and high prices
for both refined (above refi ned cane
sugar prices in the United States) and
estandar (semi-refined) sugar in Mexico
and possibly due to provisions of the new
suspension agreements between the
United States and Mexico that put any
new deals after July 3 under the terms
of the new agreements. U.S. imports of
sugar from Mexico were strong in May
but were preliminarily estimated to fall
sharply in June in anticipation of the
revised suspension agreements.
