Cash Wheat
HARD WINTER. Premiums on hard
red winter wheat in Kansas City were 20c
a bu higher to 14c lower last week. The
sole loss was posted at 12.8% protein.
Most gains were posted early in the week
with the basis becoming increasingly
stable toward the week's end. The fi rmer
tone to the basis was in sharp contrast
to the previous week, when cash wheat
premiums tumbled 11c to 70c a bu from
11.4% protein through 14%. Wheat
receipts last week were lighter than in
the previous week. Recent adjustments
to the basis, up and down, reflected the
market's efforts to determine the relative
value of hard red winter wheat protein in
a second consecutive low-protein year.
Mill pipelines mostly were in good order. Business in to-arrive wheat was constrained by wide spreads between bids and
offers. Growers and elevators were wary of
committing to contracts obligating them
to ship wheat with protein levels that may
not be available from the harvest.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
indicated the winter wheat harvest as
of July 16 was completed in Texas, 98%
completed in Oklahoma, 98% in Kansas,
83% in Nebraska (52% as the five-year average for the date), 43% in South Dakota
(14%), 73% in Colorado (47%) and 9% in
Montana (1%).
Nebraska harvest wheat continued to
exhibit mostly low average protein. There
were indications of higher-protein supply
being harvested in South Dakota, where
drought conditions stressed the crop. At
the same time, crop production in the
state will be down sharply from 2016.
Plains Grains, Inc., in its July 21
harvest summary indicated, based on
354 of 530 expected samples, 2017 hard
red winter wheat was averaging 60.1
lbs per bu in test weight (60.7 lbs as the
2016 crop average) and 11.2% in protein
(11.2%). The average grade was No. 1 hard
red winter, the same as in 2016.
Millers cautioned the samples in surveys such as those conducted by Plains
Grains may not be fully representative of
the crop's quality in view of the fact they
are drawn from rail cars entering marketing channels while the producer was
thought to be retaining much of his very
low-protein supply. They maintained

the crop average protein will prove to be
lower than indicated by the samples.
Gulf bids on 12% protein hard red
winter wheat were 155c over K.C. September, down 2c.
HARD SPRING. Premiums on hard red
spring wheat in Minneapolis were 15c
a bu higher to 45c lower last week. Still
relatively heavy daily receipts in Minneapolis continued to weigh on the basis.
With Minneapolis wheat futures holding
above $7.75 a bu, farmers and elevators
have been willing sellers of old crop supply. This was particularly true in the case
of producers in eastern areas who know
they'll have a crop, less true in western
areas, where drought conditions raised
the prospect of some growers not having
crop at all. Producer advance sales of new
crop wheat were lighter than the market
would like to see at this date.
The U.S.D.A. rated spring wheat
condition in the six primary states as of
July 16 at 34% good to excellent (35% a
week earlier and 69% a year ago), 25%
fair and 41% poor to very poor (39% a
week earlier). The spring wheat harvest

SOFT RED. The U.S.D.A. indicated the
soft red winter wheat harvest as of July 16
was completed in Illinois, 90% completed
in Indiana, 87% in Ohio, 99% in Missouri
and 34% in Michigan. Michigan millers
indicated Michigan soft red winter and
soft white winter harvested to date had
very good quality. For both wheat classes,
incidence of vomitoxin was negligible.
St. Louis-area mill bids for nearby
were 5c under Chicago September to 15c
over. Chicago mill bids for nearby were
the Chicago September price. Toledo
mill bids for July-September were 10c under Chicato September; October, the Chicago December price. Elevator bids were
15c under Chicago September. Cincinnati elevator bids were 10c over Chicago
September. Michigan white wheat mill
bids were 10@25c over Chicago September; soft red bids were 15c under September to the September price. Gulf bids on
soft red winter wheat for nearby were 37c
