Sweeteners
Beet sugar prices were unchanged
and trading was slow last week, but
sweetener markets weren't without
activity as the beet harvest got under
way in the Red River Valley and initial
2017 corn sweetener pricing guidance
was offered at $1 to $2 a cwt above 2017
contracted prices.
Bulk refined beet sugar prices were
firm at 32c to 33.50c a lb f.o.b. Midwest
through Sept. 30, 2017. Beet sugar offers
for next year were around 32.5c a lb f.o.b.

high as 36c f.o.b. in the Northeast. Only
fi ll-in trading was indicated for this year,
and steady but slow sales continued for
next year. Processors were comfortable
with sales with estimates that some have
more than 60% of prospective production already booked for 2017-18.
Sugar beet harvesting began last
week in the Red River Valley with the
first sugar expected "in a few days," one
industry source said. Beet harvesting was
expected to begin in Michigan this week,
with beet pulling dependent on weather
in both areas. Harvesting was earlier than
normal in both cases. In the Red River
Valley, processors hoped to get ahead of
what appears to be a very good crop, while
in Michigan, it was hoped the early start
would prevent losses in beet piles if winter
weather is unseasonably warm.

higher except for Montana, where the
already-poor crop declined further with
ratings of only 26% good to excellent

59% fair and 15% poor to very poor, the
state U.S. Department of Agriculture
office said. Good-to-excellent ratings
improved to 92% in Minnesota (89% a
week earlier), 67% in Michigan (59%),
88% in Colorado (86%) and 75% in
Oregon (74%). Good-to-excellent ratings
were unchanged from a week earlier in
North Dakota at 92%, Idaho at 89% and
Wyoming at 82%.
Bulk refined cane sugar prices were
steady. Refined cane sugar was offered
at 34c a lb f.o.b. in the Southeast for both
2016-17 and 2017-18, around 36c a lb f.o.b.
in the Northeast and at 40c a lb and
above delivered on the West coast.
Louisiana sugar cane was rated 78%
good to excellent (79% a week earlier),
18% fair and 4% poor to very poor,
the U.S.D.A. said. Sugar cane was 17%
planted, even with the five-year average.
New cane sugar offers from Mexico
still were lacking, traders said.
The first pricing letter for 2018
from a major corn refiner went out
Aug. 15 with increases of $2 a cwt from
2017 contracted levels for regular corn
syrup, $1.50 a cwt for 55% high-fructose
corn syrup and $1 a cwt for 42% HFCS,
effective through Sept. 8, 2017. Another
major refiner indicated it would not send
a general pricing letter this year but
would work with customers individually.
There were no indications that any new
contracting had taken place. FBN
