Peanuts in the eight major states were
63% harvested as of Oct. 22, just ahead of
61% as the 2012-16 average for the date, the
U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
The California almond harvest was
nearly completed while the pistachio and
walnut harvests continued as of Oct. 22,
the state U.S.D.A. field office said.
Oregon hazelnut processors and
growers agreed to a minimum 96½c per
lb for the 2017 crop, down 18% from last
year's final price and compared with a
record $1.70 per lb in 2014, according to a
report in the Capital Press. Although the
crop was forecast at 36,000 tons, down
18% from 2016, a sharply higher outturn
in Turkey pressured prices globally. FBN

production were record high for the
month, the U.S.D.A. said in its latest
Livestock Slaughter report. Total red
meat production was 4,404 million lbs,
pork was 2,210 million lbs and beef was
2,301 million lbs, all up 2% from a year
earlier. Year-to-date red meat production
was up 4% from the same period last
year, with pork up 3% and beef up 5%.
Frozen red meat stocks on Sept. 30
were 1,149 million lbs, down 5% from
a year ago, with beef at 488 million lbs,
down 6%, and pork at 616 million lbs,
down 4%, the U.S.D.A. said.
There were 10.8 million cattle on
feed on Oct. 1, up 5% from a year ago, the
U.S.D.A. said. September marketings
were up 3%, and the number of cattle
placed in feedlots was up 13%.
The U.S.D.A. beef and pork cutout
values both were higher last week with
both also above year-ago levels. Higher
trimming prices lifted the beef value,
and solid gains in ham prices lifted pork.
Total frozen turkey stocks on Sept. 30
were 568 million lbs, up 11% from a year
earlier, with whole turkeys at 330 million
lbs, up 23%, the U.S.D.A. said. Chicken
stocks were 823 million lbs, up 7%. FBN
