ShopKeep will track time clocks, inventory, food
costing, ingredient tracking and sales reporting. It
also has a QuickBooks add-on. “Basically, all the
things you need to run your store,” Richelson says.
“We’re an open platform, so we want people to build
extensions onto ShopKeep to help retailers choose
specific functions that we maybe don’t handle.”
A virtual gallery
On hectic afternoons at Creative Cakes in Tinley
Park, IL, on Chicago’s South Side, brides-to-be
peruse pages of elegant designs at the front counter,
earnestly seeking the perfect image of their dream
wedding cake. Only instead of turning pages upon
pages of a printed catalogue, they are pointing at
pictures on an iPad. “We don’t print paper catalogues
anymore,” says Beth Fahey, who owns Creative Cakes
with her sister, Becky Palermo. “We can load photos
of our cakes on the iPad in seconds, and it’s up. Our
customers love it.”
Three iPads are bolted to the front counter — with
pivot stands that allow customers to show bakery
staff which designs they want. There are another two
“floating” iPads that can be passed around. “We take
