the result of high feed prices due to
the 2012 drought. But lower feed
prices resulting from forecast record large 2013 corn and soybean
crops were expected to usher in
an increase of 1.4% in 2014 milk
production.
“Improved producer margins
would augur for a sizeable rebound in
milk production in 2014,” USDA said.
Prices for nonfat dry milk, butter and cheddar cheese were forecast
to increase in 2013, with dry whey
values easing. In 2014, USDA sees
continued strength in nonfat dry
milk prices on good export
demand but slightly weaker
values for cheese, butter and
dry whey. Increased demand
for dairy products in 2014
will somewhat limit pres-
sure from higher milk production,
USDA said.
Egg output expands
The egg product market in the first
half of 2013 was dominated by soaring demand for egg whites, the result
of “whites only” breakfast entrees at
several fast-food and casual-service
restaurants. Prices for dried and frozen egg whites jumped by 25% and
for liquid whites by more than 40%
from late January to early May. But
what’s good for the white may not be
good for the yolk, supplies of which
soared because there was no equally
strong demand for the separated
yolks. Consequently, prices for dried
and liquid yolks were at 10-month
lows and for frozen yolks at 6-month
lows in early May.

in 2013 and by about 2% in 2014,
mainly as the result of lower feed
costs. Egg production has increased every year since
2008. USDA said higher
egg production would
mostly offset increased
demand for eggs and egg
products.
