ership positions, culminates
with real-world feedback. "In
the final session, participants
will have an opportunity to
ask the people they work with
- not the cohort group, their
actual co-workers - for feedback in a 360° review style."
Additionally, "one and
done" types of classes sometimes don't leave room for a
lot of networking. By threading a course with the same
group throughout the year,
BEMA hopes to not only
engage new leaders but also
provide opportunities to develop lasting relationships.
"In other classes we've
done, we get great feedback
about the content, and people
say they learn a lot, but they
always talk about connecting
with people, too," Mr. Brown
said. "This industry is so
much about connecting, and
if you're in a class of 25, then
at a second and third class
with the same people, you'll
have a breadth of connections in the industry through
a shared learning experience."
Ms. Bowers emphasized
that while current industry leaders will benefit from
these kinds of classes, they
also present an opportunity
for emerging leaders. "We
know the top part of leadership can use some polishing,
but there's also a huge gap at
the middle level, and we need
to develop those leaders," she
said.

bined with the breadth of the
industry connections. "This
model will bring these together," she said.
LEARNING ONSITE
Education
improvements
don't focus exclusively on
external opportunities or
outside networking. Known
workshops types such as
Train the Trainer are also being delivered in new ways,
and many programs take a
tailored approach for individual companies.
BEMA is developing approximately five new classes
that can be held on-site at
a company's location. "The
benefit to this type of workshop is how it engages the
member reach," Ms. Bowers
said. For instance, a member
company might send one or
two employees to an off-site
course, but that company
could engage 15 or 20 employees in the same class if
held in-house.

"We know the top part of
leadership can use some
polishing, but there's also a
huge gap at the middle level,
and we need to develop those
leaders."

This style of workshop is
totally customizable, according to Mr. Brown and Ms.
Bowers, who recently conducted an on-site "learn to
train" workshop at Formost
Fuji Corp., following the
company's internal equipment training. "At that session, the Formost team was
able to train in their own
environment, on their own
equipment," Mr. Brown said.
EDUCATION FOR ALL
This new style of education is
BEMA's way of delivering on
the "and" that will benefit all
aspects of the baking industry. "We've been listening to
the industry and keeping our
eyes and ears open to what the
needs are," Mr. Brown said.
"Rather than offering 'this or
that,' we have found an 'and'
approach. It's broader; it's better."
Ms. Bowers pointed out that
all BEMA's revamped education programs will appeal to a
range of people in a variety of
roles in the industry, from engineers to executives for both
bakeries and suppliers. "This
is a learning community," she
said.
Education and networking
are at the heart of any industry
association. "That's what associations do," Mr. Brown said.
"They're about growing their
industry and making it better
- educating and investing in
the industry."

WHAT'S

THE
BUZZ
ABOUT?
Curious as to what BEMA's
leadership training is all
about? IBIE attendees will

development, presents
"Leadership: What's All the
Buzz About?" from 11 a.m.
to noon on Saturday, Oct. 8,
as part of the management

In this interactive
