FMI Lauds New Food Safety Rules
The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) praised President Obama for signing The Food Safety Modernization Act into law on Jan. 4. FMI President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie G. Sarasin issued the following statement: “America’s grocery stores and its customers praise the President and the Congress for working together with industry to improve the safety of our food supply. Today’s supermarkets offer a wide variety of foods from across the globe. This law will enhance the safety of our food supply by requiring every food producing company to have a written food safety plan, by providing the Food and Drug Administration the authority to recall products, by recognizing third-party certification plans, and by adopting a risk-based approach to food safety inspections. Working together, we all will play an important role to prevent foodborne illnesses and strengthen the safety of our food supply.” Processors of all types of food will now be required to evaluate the hazards in their operations, implement and monitor effective measures to prevent contamination, and have a plan in place to take any corrective actions that are necessary. Also, the FDA will have much more effective enforcement tools for ensuring those plans are adequate and properly implemented, including mandatory recall authority when needed to swiftly remove contaminated food from the market.

Wegmans to Open First New England Store
Wegmans Food Markets has started recruitment for full-time positions for its new Northborough, MA store, the company’s first New England location, set to open in October 2011. The Northborough store will employ about 600 people, 550 of whom will be hired locally. Wegmans has been included in FORTUNE magazine’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 13 consecutive years. The Northborough Wegmans, a 145,000 square-foot supermarket, will be part of Northborough Crossing, a $100 million shopping and residential complex located at the intersection of Routes 9 and 20. Rochester, NY-based Wegmans Food Markets, popular for its selection of high-quality prepared foods and grocery, will open stores in several additional New England locations in the future.
