Supermarket Tours
Perhaps the most utilized service of instore staff dietitians is supermarket tours. At Hy-Vee, customers approach Grushon with a specific tour topic in mind, such as carbohydrate counting for diabetes or heart health and sodium. “Whatever the topic may be, I walk with them aisle-by-aisle through the store and teach them about what to look for on food labels, which foods will help improve their health, and which foods they should

limit,” Grushon says. “I also provide them recipes and food samples.” Customer feedback is always positive, and Grushon feels like the tours are one of the greatest teaching tools she offers in the store. “I have never had someone walk away from a supermarket tour disappointed,” she says. “I have had customers who participated in my store tours email me months later letting me know how much weight they have lost from what they learned. And they are so appreciative that Hy-Vee offers dietitian services.” Even if your instore doesn’t currently employ dietitians, you can still

service your customers with supermarket tours. Simply encourage offsite dietitians to come in with outside groups to conduct them. When Harrell worked for a hospital, for example, she conducted supermarket tours through a hospital wellness program. “The people on the tour would take notes and soak up the information,” Harrell says. So, whether your supermarket’s main motivation for partnering with dietitians is to better your community or to increase your store’s publicity, the decision will be a good one and will benefit everyone involved.
