Strengths Training
One of the most popular debates in raising children nowadays is whether it is best to focus on your child’s strengths or weaknesses to help them achieve their full potential. Do you spend more time helping a child who is already gifted in math develop those skills to a higher level or do you work harder on improving the child’s weakness, say, in writing. Of course, most people want their children to be well rounded, so the answer is probably some of both. Now let’s apply the same debate to the workplace. For bakery and deli managers, you want your staff to be as productive as possible. Your goal is to help them achieve success in their work every day. If everyone succeeds doing what they are supposed to do, that’s half the battle. Addressing this topic on the final day of this year’s IDDBA convention, Gallup Organization veteran Marcus Buckingham delivered an insightful speech on the importance of strengths training to any company. “Don’t imagine that failure has anything to teach us about excellence,” he contends. “If you want people to develop more, focus on their strengths. Find your edge, and maximize the daylights out of it.” Buckingham shared a Gallup study that revealed China was the “least strength focused country” in the year 2000, when people all over the world were asked: Which do you think will help you be most successful - building on your strengths or fixing your weaknesses? For China, 24% focused on their strengths. By comparison in the United States, 41% focused on strengths in 2000. But nine years later, the pendulum swung in China’s favor. By 2009, 73% of Chinese people said building on strengths would help them be most successful. The percentage saying the same in the U.S. was 45% - not much change. Yet there was a massive shift in culture within China over the past decade. Now think what China has been able to accomplish with that change in attitude. Buckingham makes a great point.
