news ON OUR RADAR Foods were categorized into six groups based on the amount of time the food saves households in meal preparation or convenience - basic ingredients, complex ingredients, ready-to-cook, ready-to-eat, meals or snacks from fast-food restaurants, and meals or snacks from sit-down restaurants. The least convenient foods - basic and complex ingredients - constituted less than a quarter of the average household food budget. The most convenient foods - purchased from fast-food and sit-down restaurants - constitute around half of the total budget. BelGioiso was awarded with a Best in Class Blue Ribbon for its fresh mozarella at the 2016 American Cheese Society in Des Moines, Iowa, in August. Touted as the annual "Cheese Oscars," the contest drew a total of 1,843 entries with the highly coveted awards handed out to a crowd of artisan cheesemakers. "This recognition from the ACS is greatly appreciated and our cheesemakers will use this award as a reminder to keep their team focused on quality," says Gaetano Auricchio, BelGioioso vice-president. BelGioiso also took second with its burrata, and third with its mascarpone and fontina cheeses. Green Dirt Farm, based in Weston, MO, also took home awards from the ACS awards. The sheep's milk producer took first in Fresh Sheep's Milk with Flavor Added with its fresh garlic peppercorn. Green Dirt placed second with its Fresh Plain, Prairie Tome, and Tuffet cheeses and its Only Ewe sheep yogurt. The company also had four thirdplace finishes. Raley's Family of Fine Stores launched a new, multi-dimensional effort to share its vision of health and wellness with customers. The 8 * SEPTEMBER 2016 * instore campaign - called "Let's Begin" - invites customers to take small steps toward a healthier lifestyle through education, personal goal setting and sharing. "We want to change the way the world eats, one plate at a time," says Michael Teel, president, CEO and owner. "Raley's has been in our family for over 80 years and I want to empower change in the methods in which food and resources are delivered to our customers. I know our stores have the ability to be a trusted source of information for our customers to meet their personal health needs." As the company says, small, progressive changes in food choices and lifestyle options can make a significant impact over time. As each individual's food journey is a unique experience, Raley's says it hopes to educate customers and help them select healthier choices. NACS announced its speaker lineup - highlighted by Peyton Manning - for the 2016 NACS show, slated for Oct. 18-21 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Productivity and leadership specialist Merit Gest will address attendees on the afternoon of Oct. 18 while Steve Gross, founder and chief playmaker of the Life is Good Playmakers, will provide an uplifting message on Oct. 19. Oct. 20 will see the debut of the 2016 NACS Ideas 2 Go video before Manning closes out the show by speaking on Oct. 21. Manning is the only five-time NFL MVP and has won a pair of Super Bowls, most recently leading the Denver Broncos to a title in February. Waitrose became the UK's first major supermarket to operate a cashless store after it opened a workplace convenience store in the flagship office building of Sky TV. The Waitrose-branded store will serve more than 3,500 Sky employees, who will only be able to make purchases by card or through mobile devices at one of five self-service checkouts in the store. The focus is on evening meals and food to go, including sandwiches, wraps and sushi, as well as a selection of fresh produce and ingredients, celebration cakes, freshly cut flowers and household staples. Bread and croissants are baked each day, too. Dollar General said last week that it bought 41 former Walmart Express locations and plans to relocate 40 existing Dollar General stores to new sites by October. The company will also add a new location. Walmart closed 102 of its express format stores in January. Dollar General said it will use the former Walmart buildings to give shoppers more room to browse and more products to buy. Among the expanded offerings will be deli meat, fresh produce and more. BELGIOISO A United States Department of Agriculture report says American households are increasing their demand for convenience foods. The report, authored by Abigail M. Okrent and Aylin Kumcu, says demand for the six food groups, regardless of their level of convenience to the household, is largely determined by price and income-led changes in total food expenditures, although advertising plays a role in demand for fast-food meals and snacks.
