Britt to succeed retiring Callaghan as Pepperidge Farm president
CAMDEN, N.J. — Irene Chang Britt has been named president of the Pepperidge Farm business unit of the Campbell Soup Co., effective July 31, the end of the company’s fiscal year. Ms. Britt will replace Pat Callaghan, who is retiring. Ms. Britt became senior vicepresident and chief strategy officer for the company in October 2010 and is responsible for Campbell’s global strategy. She will be based at the Pepperidge Farm headquarters in Norwalk, Conn., and report to Denise Morrison, president and chief executive officer of the company. Callaghan “Throughout her career, Irene has consistently grown businesses through a focus on brand building and innovation,” Ms. Morrison said. “She has played a crucial role in defining Campbell’s new growth strategies and has been a valued partner to me as we charted a new course for our company. Irene’s relentless focus on the consumer, track record of successful innovation and delivery of business results make her an ideal candidate to succeed Pat.” Mr. Callaghan will step down on July 31 and become a special adviser to Ms. Morrison until Nov. 1, when he will formally retire from the company. “Under Pat’s leadership, Pepperidge Farm has developed a culture of consumer-focused innovation, strengthened its brands and delivered consistently strong business results with seven consecutive years of top-line, bottom-line and market share growth,” Ms. Morrison said. “As we work to accelerate Campbell’s rate of innovation, Pepperidge Farm can serve as a model. Farm in 1979 as an account manager, and was promoted to assistant marketing manager in 1981. He was marketing manager for both dry and fresh bakery brands at Pepperidge, marketing manager for new products and director of marketing for the bakery business unit before becoming general manager of the frozen business unit in 1990. He was named a vice-president in 1992. In April 1994, Mr. Callaghan was named vice-president and general manager of the company’s biscuit division. In 1996 he was named senior vice-president of marketing. He became president of the business unit in 2006, and is credited with leading Pepperidge Farm to focus on the development of innovative new products such as Milano Melts, Milano Slices, Baked Naturals Snack Crackers, Cracker Chips and Deli Flats. Mr. Callaghan is a recognized leader in the baking industry, and is a past chairman of the American Bakers Association, serving from 2000 to 2001. He also is a founding trustee and cochairman of the Grain Foods Foundation. In addition, he has been a member of the boards of the American Institute of Baking and the Biscuit & Cracker Manufacturing Association. Murray Lender, bagel guru, dies at 81
AVENTURA, FLA. — Murray Lender, who helped turn his father Harry’s 800-squarefoot bakery in New Haven, Conn., into a national company selling packaged and frozen bagels, died March 21 following complications from a fall he suffered at his home 10 weeks ago. He was 81. Murray, along with his brothers, Samuel and Marvin, worked in the bagel business, and Murray spent many years as chief executive officer of Lender’s Bagels, which the company claims was the first to begin selling bagels in packages to supermarkets in 1955. In 1960, Lender’s started freezing bagels for shipment beyond New Haven without worrying about them becoming stale. The frozen bagel would make its way to households across the country that had never had them. The Lenders sold the family business to Kraft Foods Inc. in 1984, and Mr. Lender remained the company spokesman for a

Stan Shaffer to v.p. of baking at King’s Hawaiian
TORRANCE, CALIF. — Stan Shaffer has been promoted to vice-president of baking at King’s Hawaiian. Mr. Shaffer has spent the past six years as vice-president of manufacturing at the company. Prior to joining King’s Hawaiian, he was general manager of Galasso’s Bakery Inc. in Mira Loma, Calif., from 2003 to 2005. Earlier he was director of operations at Goglanians Bakery in Santa Ana, Calif., from 2001 to 2003, and director of operations at Gold Coast Baking Co. in Santa Ana from 1999 to 2001. He spent the first 18 years of his career with Fresh Start Bakeries, Inc. in Brea, Calif., including as vicepresident of U.S. manufacturing. MBN

Greg Loftus, Pendleton Flour plant manager, dies
PENDLETON, ORE. — Kenneth “Greg” Loftus, plant manager of the Pendleton Flour Mills, L.L.C. in Pendleton, died March 16. He was 53 years old. Mr. Loftus joined Pendleton in 1983, working in several positions until being named plant manager of the mill. Prior to joining Pendleton, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad from 1977 to 1983. He is survived by his wife, Lela; a daughter, Amanda; his parents, Ken and Moonyeen Loftus; two brothers, Don and Gary; a sister, Kris Loftus Horning; and three grandchildren.
