In results that surprised company management as well as Wall Street, net income of Interstate Bakeries Corp. in the second quarter ended Nov. 16 fell 45% from the second quarter of fiscal 2001. Interstate shares fell 35% on the news, to a new 52-week low. A week earlier Interstate said higher baking ingredient costs prompted the company to raise prices on most of its products by an average of 3%. The nation’s largest wholesale baker also said it will close an 80-year-old bread and bun bakery in Tampa, Fla. Sara Lee Bakery Group is reducing the staff of its St. Louis headquarters and U.S. regional offices by 18%.

Wickard said Dec. 27 in a nationwide broadcast that announced the decision of the government to inaugurate rationing of commercially processed fruits and vegetables, including soups and juices, starting in February. Raymond K. Stritzinger, vicepresident and director of the Continental Baking Co., was elected president of the company. James A. Tobey, director of the department of nutrition at the American Institute of Baking, issued a statement denouncing criticisms of white bread in a new short film entitled “Keeping Fit.” MBN

President Ronald Reagan last week formally proposed a payment-in-kind program to reduce government-controlled stocks of wheat and feed grains by using the grain as payments to farmers in return for acreage reductions on the 1983 crop. Acquisition of Bakers Digest by Sosland Publishing Co. was announced Dec. 13 by Morton I. Sosland, president of Sosland Publishing. Bakers Digest has been published the last 57 years by Seibel Publishing Co.

A special panel of the War Committee of the American Bakers Association and the Associated Retail Bakers of America formulated and presented to Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard, proposals for bread and other bakery products. The wide ranging proposals included limiting the number of bread varieties baked by any bakery to six, that all wheat should be enriched and that cellophane and other transparent materials should not be used in packaging.
