Panera hires executive v.p., c.f.o.
ST. LOUIS — Roger C. Matthews
Jr. has been named executive vicepresident and chief financial officer of Panera Bread Co., effective
March 18.
Mr. Matthews will bring to Panera
more than 15 years of strategic and
financial expertise from his time at
Goldman Sachs where he was the senior relationship banker for more than
40 restaurant, consumer and retail
clients. Most recently, he was managing director and sector head of the
U.S. restaurant industry in Goldman
Sachs’ Investment Banking Division.

J.D. Kice of Kice Industries dies at 71
WICHITA, KAS. — J.D. Kice, co-owner and engineer at Kice Industries, a
manufacturer of pneumatic conveying
equipment for the flour milling industry for nearly 70 years, died Jan. 30. He
was 71.
J.D. Kice’s brother, Bob Kice, coowner and vice-president of sales for
Kice Industries, said J.D. began working for the company when he was 16
and made many important contributions until his retirement six years ago.
“His expertise was in the engineering and design side of things,” Bob

Kice said. “Whether it was designing
fans, pumps or whatever, he would
help come up with new and special
products as well as modifications to
existing products.”
After a tour of duty for the U.S.
Army in the Vietnam War in the early
1960s, J.D. Kice attended Kansas State
University in Manhattan, where he received a degree in milling science.
He rejoined Kice Industries in 1968
and worked on the side of the business
that served the flour milling industry,
Bob Kice said.

Mile Hi unveils new hires, promotions
DENVER — Mile Hi Companies has
announced several promotions and
new hires at its Mile Hi Foods, Mile Hi
Specialty Foods and Mile Hi Bakery
businesses.
Jeff Jeppesen has been hired as
vice-president of sales and marketing
at Mile Hi Specialty Foods and Mile
Hi Bakery. Promotions were given to
Mike Blanton, to vice-president of
Mile Hi Foods, Cody Mullins, to vicepresident of Mile Hi Specialty Foods,
and Robert Mares Jr., to general manager of Mile Hi Specialty Foods’ Dallas division.

look to aggressively grow our Bakery

AB Mauri names
v.p. of sales
CHESTERFIELD, MO. — Joseph (Jay)
Hardy has joined AB Mauri North
America as eastern region vice-president of sales. He previously was the
director of co-pack operations for Bimbo Bakeries USA.
Mr. Hardy has 25 years of baking
experience. Previously he was an
industry sales manager for Danisco
USA and a commercial development
specialist at Novo Nordisk BioChem
North America, Inc. (now Novozymes North America, Inc.). MBN

Before joining Goldman Sachs in
1996, Mr. Matthews held various positions at J.P. Morgan Securities, Inc.
He received a bachelor’s of science
degree from the University of Virginia
and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Graduate
School.
Pat Kelly, who has served as Panera’s interim c.f.o. since April 2012, will
remain in place until the end of March
to ensure a smooth transition.

For many years, he worked alongside his younger brothers Bill, Bob and
Tom, as well as his father, Russell Kice,

founded the company in 1945.
“Bill and Tom would usually come
up with an idea and they would throw
it to J.D. and ask him to make it work,
and he did,” Bob Kice said.
J.D. Kice was preceded in death by
his father, Russell Kice. He is survived
by his wife, Candace; his children,
Alex Kice, Greg Kice and Nicole Klassen; brothers Bill Kice, Bob Kice and
Tom Kice; sister Marilyn Applequest;
and mother Naomi Kice. MBN

Creative Food Consultants
president dies
JOPLIN, MO. — Scott Sanders, president
of Creative Food Consultants, a provider of
product development, quality assurance and
food safety expertise, died Jan. 11. He was 61.
Prior to being named president of Creative Food Consultants in 2010, Mr. Sanders was in charge of corporate quality assurance and consumer safety at Safeway
for 12 years. In that post he was responsible
for the quality assurance and food safety
programs at U.S. commercial high speed
bakeries, as well as for product development of cookies and crackers. He also oversaw internal food safety/quality audits at
beverage, dairy, meat, bakery and grocery
product manufacturing operations.
He was a member of the American Society of Baking’s Food Technical Regulatory
Affairs Committee, AIB Food Safety Advisory Committee, and the AACC Milling
and Baking Division.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn; a son,
David (Tarah); a daughter, Jessica Bradley;
three grandchildren; two brothers; and a
