Ingredion launches satiety ingredient
Ingredion, Inc., Westchester, Ill., has introduced a
Weightain satiety management ingredient based on whole
grains. By suppressing people's hunger urge, Weightain
is able to reduce calorie intake by about 50 to 100 calories
per day, according
to Ingredion. The
ingredient has been
shown to work in
low-moisture baked
goods, such as bars,
as well as soups
and smoothies.
The proprietary,
gluten-free
ingredient leverages
Ingredion's highamylose resistant
starch, whole
grains, hydrocolloids and composite technology. The starch
fermentation in the colon triggers satiety, decreasing feelings
of hunger. Increased gastrointestinal viscosity prolongs
absorption, reducing calorie consumption. Whole grains
delay digestion, reducing hunger pangs.
"According to research from Gallup's satiety survey
and Ingredion proprietary research, over 33% of American
consumers are aware of the concept of satiety, and 45%
to 55% are aware of foods and beverages that help them
feel full for longer," said Lorraine Niba, global director
of nutrition for Ingredion. "But 22% of consumers look
to whole grain-based products to help them satisfy their
hunger. Weightain satiety ingredient empowers food and

New corn fiber is non-bioengineered
Penford Food Ingredients, Centennial, Colo., has launched
PenFibe CW, a non-bioengineered white corn fiber that is a
minimum 80% dietary fiber. The ingredient has been
shown to reduce
calories when
replacing higher
caloric ingredients
such as flour.
PenFibe CW has a
neutral taste and is
heat and pH stable.
Potential applications
include baked foods,
cereal, breakfast and
nutrition bars, glutenfree items, snacks,
tortillas and sports
nutrition products.
Penford has developed a ginger peach muffin prototype
with PenFibe CW that has 5 grams of dietary fiber and
140 calories per serving. The prototype with PenFibe CW
compares to a control ginger peach muffin prototype with
1 gram of dietary fiber and 150 calories per serving.

Curcumin ingredient may work
as yellow coloring agent
Frutarom Switzerland Ltd. Health BU, Wädenswil,
Switzerland, and Aquanova AG have joined forces to market
NovaSol curcumin, a solubilized, highly bioavailable form of
curcumin. A yellow
pigment found in
turmeric, curcumin
is used as a coloring
agent by the food
industry and as a
phytochemical in the
dietary supplement
industry.
Frutarom Health
will work in
collaboration with
Molecular Health
Technologies, its
sales and marketing
agent in the U.S. and
Canadian markets.
Aquanova AG, based in Germany, manufactures ingredient
formulas. A European research projected funded by the
German Federal Ministry of Education and Research led to
the development of NovaSol curcumin.
The proprietary curcumin technology offers a liquid,
crystal-clear yellow solution for use across a variety of
applications.
"The demand for anti-inflammatory ingredients, and the
growing amount of scientific evidence on the health benefits
of curcumin, will continue to drive the sales of turmeric
