Raising further doubt about
its future and introducing the
specter of a possible bankruptcy filing, Interstate Bakeries Corp. has delayed for
a second time filing its fiscal
2004 10-K annual report with
the Securities and Exchange
Commission and revealed it
has retained the services of a
prominent turnaround consulting firm.

General Mills, Inc. said it is in
discussions with the Bakery,
Confectionery Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International, over the possible
closing of its Vallejo, Calif.,
flour mill.
After steadily cutting back
production and staffing at its
Fort Payne, Ala., baking plant
in recent months, Sara Lee
Bakery Group disclosed plans
to close the plant completely
by mid-January 2005.

Recommended intake of
grains products would be
lowered as many as two servings per day in proposals just
published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the
Department of Health and
Human Services.

Cinnabon, the leading bakery chain specializing in
cinnamon rolls, will have a
different owner. Roark Capital Group, an Atlanta-based
private investment firm, announced it will acquire the
chain from AFC Enterprises.

Gordon L. Davidson, who
died June 5 at the age of 64.

Corp. have agreed in principle for the purchase by
Ralston Purina of ITT Continental Baking Co., the nation's largest wholesale baker
of bread and cake products.
Donald L. Staheli has been
elected president and chief
operating officer of Continental Grain Co., with responsibility for the daily
and near-term
strategic direction
of all operations
of the international agribusiness
concern. Michel
Fribourg, who has Staheli
been president
and chief executive officer of
Continental Grain since 1944,
retains the position of c.e.o.
and chairman of the board.
George M. Wilson, chairman
of Fuchs Baking Co., Miami,
has been nominated for election as chairman of the American Bakers Association at the
organization's annual meeting next month in Montreal.
John DeConcini, president
of the Bakery, Confectionery
& Tobacco Workers International Union, will address
the annual convention of the
American Bakers Association
next month in Montreal.
With the Detroit Tigers maintaining a firm grip on first
place in the eastern division standings of American
League baseball, "Tiger"

have been introduced in

Refco, Inc., a Chicago-based
futures commission merchant,
has purchased certain assets
of ContiCommodity Services,

Coca-Cola Co. and Borden,
Inc., have signed a letter of
intent for the sale of Ronco
Enterprises, Inc., a regional
producer of dry packaged
pasta, to Borden.

American Home Products
Corp., Chicago, has completed the sale of Ekco Products,
Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary to Packaging Corporation of America, a wholly
owned subsidiary of Tenneco,
Inc., Houston.

One of the most closely knit
father-son teams in Hutchinson, Kas., has been severed
by the war. W.N. Kelly, vicepresident of the William Kelly
Milling Co., and Mrs. Kelly
received a telegram from the
War Department informing
them their son Lt. Charles N.
Kelly, was killed in a crash in
Italy.
That the United States
government may yet turn
to drastic economic sanctions against Argentina was
strongly reported Sept. 5 in
diplomatic circles.
A report by the Bureau of the
Census shows that the adult
population of the United
States on Nov. 1, 1943, was
88,457,606.
