I.G.C. raises 2015-16 world
wheat production forecast

he International Grains Council
on May 28 raised its forecast
for world wheat production in
2015-16 to 715 million tonnes, up 10
million tonnes from the council's April
projection but down 6 million tonnes
from a record 721 million tonnes in 201415. It would be the second-largest crop
on record. World wheat production was
713 million tonnes in 2013-14. The I.G.C.
indicated it raised its 2015-16 production
projection because of upward revisions
for production forecasts in the European
Union, the former Soviet Union, China
and Morocco, which more than offset
reduced forecasts for the United States,
India and Pakistan.
The I.G.C. forecast world wheat
consumption in 2015-16 at a record 715
million tonnes, up 4 million tonnes from
its April projection and up 5 million
tonnes from 2014-15. The increase in
the forecast from April was attributed
to increased figures for feed use in the
E.U. and Pacific Asia. Global feeding
was forecast at 141 million tonnes, still
slightly lower than in 2014-15. World
wheat consumption as human food was
forecast at 484 million tonnes, up a bit
more than 1% from 2014-15 because
of population increase, particularly in
Africa and Asia.
World trade in wheat in 2015-16 was
forecast at 149 million tonnes, down 2

million tonnes from the April projection
and down 4 million tonnes from 153
million tonnes in 2014-15. World trade
in wheat was record high in 2013-14 at
156 million tonnes. The I.G.C. said, "The
year-over-year decline is mainly because
of likely reduced import needs in Near
East Asia, particularly by Turkey, with
weaker demand also expected in the
E.U. and North Africa."
The I.G.C. forecast 2015-16 world
wheat ending stocks at 200 million
tonnes, up 6 million tonnes from the
April projection and equal to the 201415 ending stocks. Ending stocks for the
major wheat exporting countries were
forecast at 67 million tonnes, up 2 million
tonnes from the April projection and
equal to the 2014-15 ending stocks. MBN

ain continued to slow the pace of the
2015 winter wheat harvest except
in Alabama and Georgia, where
mostly dry conditions allowed growers
to make good progress in the week ended
May 31.
The Texas winter wheat harvest was 9%
completed by May 31 compared with 4%
a week earlier and 19% as the recent fiveyear average for the date. No wheat had
been harvested by May 31 in Oklahoma
compared with 18% as the average
progress for the date.
It also was slow going for the harvest in
Louisiana and Mississippi. The Louisiana
soft red winter wheat harvest was 26%
completed by May 31 compared with 23%

a week earlier and 58% as the average
for the date. The Mississippi harvest
was under way but only 4% completed
compared with 26% as the ﬁve-year
average.
Conditions were drier in the
southeastern states of Alabama and
Georgia. The Alabama harvest was 21%
completed by May 31 compared with 14%
a week earlier and 20% as the average for
the date. The Georgia harvest was 53%
completed compared with 23% a week
earlier and 42% as the ﬁve-year average.
The South Carolina harvest also was
under way and was 2% completed by
May 31 compared with 12% as the average
