In the face of what he said could
only be described as a "surreal
experience," the president of a
venerable New Orleans independent baking company last
week spoke about prospects
both for his business and the
Crescent City. "The bottom line
is that we're a resilient city, and
we're going to be back," said
Robert J. (Sandy) Whann IV,
president, Leidenheimer Baking
Co., New Orleans.
Tying the fight for free trade to
the fight for a freer and more
secure world, President George
W. Bush last week pledged to
work toward the elimination
of agricultural subsidies.
Cargill on Sept. 9 reached
agreement to acquire the food
ingredients operations of Degussa AG of Dusseldorf, Germany, for €540 million.
Charter Baking Co., a
portfolio company of
Charterhouse Group, Inc.

Paul B. Mulhollem, president

on its core businesses, The H.J.
Heinz Co. is considering the
sale of its European seafood,

than has been experienced in
any recent month.
Wartime bread enrichment,
required by federal law, which
terminates six months after the

duration of the war, has proved
a major improvement in the
American diet, in the opinion of
Miss Georgiana H. Smurthwaite,
the state home demonstration
leader of the Kansas State College of Manhattan. "Enrichment
of flour and bread is a sound
and inexpensive method for the
achievement of better national
nutrition," she said.
Directors of the Chamber
of Commerce of the United
States have adopted a resolution calling for a definite end
to all government price controls within six months after
the termination of hostilities.
H.H. Humphrey of the Northern Milling Co., Wausau, Wis.,
was a visitor in Minneapolis
telling a most thrilling story
about his son. The boy was reported missing in action more
than a year ago, but a radio announcement on Aug. 30 stated
the boy was alive and well in a
Japanese prison camp.
Erhard R. Guenther, president
of the Pioneer Flour Mills,
San Antonio, died Sept. 25.
Mr. Guenther was one of the
veteran members of the milling industry of Texas, and had
been active in the management
of the affairs of the company
until recently. He was 75.
George H. Koppers, general
counsel of the National Biscuit Co. since 1938, was elected president of the company.
First Lt. Burton M. Joseph,
son of I.S. Joseph of I.S. Joseph & Co., Minneapolis,
who had been in the army
air forces since August of
1942, was discharged Sept.
22. Lieutenant Joseph left immediately for Minneapolis,
where he plans to join his father in his extensive millfeed
business on that market.
Kraft Cheese Co. announced
that its name is being changed
to Kraft Foods Co., Inc. John
H. Kraft, president, explained
that the change was decided
upon to reflect more fully the
company's diversified line of
