Egg Products
Egg product prices were unchanged
last week except for some weakness in
dried whites. Trade was steady. Breaking
egg prices were adjusted slightly higher
based on gains reported late the previous
week, while retail egg prices declined.
A year ago, egg product prices were declining steadily from record highs set during the summer due to tight supplies resulting from an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza. Prices of egg products have been stable to slightly weaker
the past three months, but at multi-year
lows as some domestic demand was lost
to egg replacers after the H.P.A.I. outbreak
and as flocks were replenished to higherthan-needed numbers. Dried and liquid
egg product prices last week were down
about 80% from a year ago with frozen
items down about 70%.
Breaking egg prices were about 90% below year-ago levels despite modest gains
from historic lows in June-August. Some
industry sources expected current low
prices to boost export interest in shell eggs
and egg products, which would help offset mediocre domestic demand and ample
supplies of retail and breaking eggs.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture
last week began a monthly cage-free shell
egg report (for retail eggs). The average
wholesale price of cage-free eggs was
$1.86 a dozen compared with 76c a dozen
for regular grade A large eggs and about
20c a dozen for breaking stock eggs. MBN

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices were unchanged
last week. New sales of natural cocoa
powder were reported for late 2016 into
the first half of 2017 at prices within the
quoted range, although some traders
noted a weaker tone to the market.
Cocoa butter prices in the week ended
Sept. 16 firmed for the first time in four
weeks. The Cocoa Merchants of America
quoted African-type butter at $7,650 a
tonne, up $220 from a week earlier and
up $531 from a year ago but still $345 below the Aug. 19 high of $7,995 a tonne.
The cocoa butter ratio was at a 2016 high.
New York cocoa bean futures rose for the
second week, gaining about $40 a tonne last
week after dropping about $300 a tonne in
the three weeks ended Sept. 9. Fundamental news was benign as the market awaited
new crop harvest in West Africa. MBN
