Flour recall involving Smucker,
Ardent Mills expands into U.S.
MARKHAM, ONT. - Smucker Foods
of Canada Corp., a subsidiary of The
J.M. Smucker Co., on May 31 issued
a voluntary recall on specific production codes of Golden Temple, Swad
and Maya flour products in the United
States due to possible E. coli O121 contamination.
"The impacted product was produced by Ardent Mills located in Saskatoon, Sask.," Smucker said. "Additional flour and flour products have
been voluntarily recalled in Canada in
cooperation with the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency as part of their ongoing E. coli investigation."
Smucker said the affected product is
packaged in 20-lb paper bags and was
distributed across the United States to
19 distributors and 2 small retailers. No
other Smucker Foods of Canada products distributed in the United States are
affected by the recall, and no reported
illnesses to date have been associated

with the recall, the company said.
Ardent Mills on May 26 announced
it had expanded its recall of flour and
flour products that were made, in part,
using 11 loads of Canadian wheat that
were related to the prior-recalled flour
and flour products and may have contained trace amounts of E. coli O121.
"It is with extreme caution and
commitment to food safety that Ardent Mills is expanding this recall,"
the company said. "There has been
no positive finding of contamination
and no reported illnesses associated
with the consumption of these newly
recalled products."
In its notice, Ardent said any raw
grain milled into flour may contain
bacteria and microbes from the outdoor environment in which it is grown.

MIT researchers play with food
to
create 3-D shapes
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The researchers morph into another shape later after beat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Tangible Media Group said their
discovery is akin to edible origami. They
found a way to take flat sheets of gelatin
that, when submerged in water, turn into
three-dimensional structures, including
pasta shapes like macaroni and rotini as
well as flower shapes.

Bimbo enters Indian market
with acquisition of Ready Roti
MEXICO CITY - Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de
C.V. has acquired a 65% stake in Ready
Roti India Private Ltd., a New Delhi, India-based maker of bread, pizza bases, and
sweet and savory buns. Financial terms of
the acquisition were not disclosed.
Ready Roti operates four plants, has
more than 500 employees and generates

annual sales of approximately $48 million.
The company's brands include Harvest
Gold and Harvest Selects.
"This acquisition represents Grupo Bimbo's entry to the Indian market, strengthening its presence in emerging markets, in line

The flour recall initially was linked

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency on April 12 issued an updated food
recall warning advising Canadians of
the recalled products, which have been
distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Canadians have been advised not to
use or eat certain bags of Brodie selfraising cake and pastry flour, Creative
Baker all-purpose flour, Creative Baker whole wheat flour, Golden Temple
Sooji creamy wheat and Robin Hood

Dr. Wang is a co-author of a paper on
the research that was presented at the
Association for Computing Machinery's
2017 conference on human factors in
computing systems.
The researchers created a flat, two-layer
film made from gelatin of two different
densities. The top layer of gelatin was
denser and thus able to absorb more water.
When the two-layer film was immersed in
water, the top layer curled over the bottom
layer to form a slowly rising arch.
The researchers then used three-dimensional printing strips of edible cellulose,
which absorbed little water, over the top
gelatin layer. The strips became a water
barrier and controlled the amount of water exposed to the top gelatin layer. Printing cellulose in various patterns onto the
gelatin allowed the researchers to control
the structure's response to water and the
