Dry dairy products prices last week
were mixed, cheese prices mostly declined, and butter values surged to the
highest level since early December 2015
before pulling back on Friday.
High-heat nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.)
prices were raised 1c a lb with the market said to be firming. Production was
intermittent to fill contractual needs and
was "turned off" in some cases as processors focused on low/medium-heat
outturn, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. Inventories were tight.
Low/medium-heat N.D.M. prices were
unchanged to 2c a lb lower with slight
firmness noted in the Central and East but
weakness in the West. The market was unsettled with mixed ideas about future price
direction. Production was steady at a high
level but declining in some areas as milk
supplies peaked. Inventories varied from
committed to building. Domestic demand
from bakers was steady while demand
from cheese manufacturers increased.
Lactose prices were lowered 1c a lb.
Production was steady to slightly lower.
Inventories were comfortable to building. Domestic demand was steady while

export interest was mixed, showing an increase from Oceania but a decrease from
Southeast Asia, according to the U.S.D.A.
Buttermilk powder prices were raised
1c a lb. Production eased as demand for
condensed buttermilk from ice cream
manufacturers increased, thus limiting
supply for drying. Demand for dry buttermilk was steady to increasing.
Prices of 34% whey protein concentrate (W.P.C.) and dry whey were unchanged. The market for 34% W.P.C.
remained mixed with good demand for
specific brands but less interest for others. Production was steady, and inventories were tight to comfortable. Dry whey
production was active, and inventories
were heavy and building. Demand was
mixed. The market tone was weaker, and
prices were down 5c a lb since mid-May.
Cheese outturn was active. Inventories varied but mostly were heavy and
building. Demand was steady to lighter.
Butter churning was active, but cream
supplies were tightening. Demand was
strong and above expectations. Some
traders expected prices to remain firm
into the fall as many buyers have not covered second-half 2017 butter needs. MBN
