U.S. chains, the results may
lead to a seismic shift in the
marketplace, resulting in $55
billion in annual sales going
from national brands to private label and driving private
label's dollar market share to
24% within a decade. The projection was offered by McKinsey & Co. in a 2007 report to
branded manufacturers.

Ty A. Deese, president of
Flowers Foods Inc.'s bakery
in Villa Rica, Ga., passed
away Nov. 16. He was 44
years old. Mr. Deese is the
son of George and Glenda
Deese. George Deese is president and chief executive officer of Flowers Foods.

The Kellogg Co., to acquire
Bear Naked Inc., a Norwalk,
Conn.-based maker of granola, trail mix and hot cereal.
The acquisition from Wholesome & Hearty Foods Co.
also included the Gardenburger brand.
Judge Jerry W. Venters of the
U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the
Western District of Missouri
on Nov. 29 denied a request
from Interstate Bakeries
Corp. that would have given
the nation's largest wholesale baker the details of an
arrangement between The
Yucaipa Companies, L.L.C.
and BBU, Inc., New Bakery,
Inc. and Bimbo Bakeries USA,
Inc., and the International
Brotherhood of Teamsters.
If the successful private label
strategies of several large retailers are emulated by other

completed the acquisition of
the capital stock of privately
held Charles Freihofer Baking
Co., Inc., headquartered at

The new 10,000-cwt daily
capacity flour mill of the
Russell-Miller Milling Co.
in Alton, Ill., the newest in
America, began operations
Nov. 24, 14 months after
construction work started,
replacing the plant of the
company that was destroyed
by fire March 16, 1946.

Mrs. Myers, to Eugene Richard
Schlesinger of New York, was
made known here last week.
A nationwide telephone
hook-up connecting all of the
mills and sales offices of the
Russell-Miller Milling Co.,
over which officers of the
company addressed the entire staff of the organization,
marked the opening of the
new 10,000-cwt mill at Alton,
Ill., and at the same time the
sixty-fifth anniversary of the
founding of the business.
James Ford Bell, chairman of
the board and founder of General Mills, Inc., and dean of
American Millers, resigned as
chairman of the organization
at the meeting of its directors
Nov. 25. Harry A. Bullis, now
president of the company, was
elected chairman of the board.
Leslie N. Perrin, now executive vice-president, was named
to the office of president. Mr.
Bell, it was announced, will
continue with
the company as
chairman of the
newly authorized Committee
on Finance and
Technological
Progress.

Nov. 24 at the offices of the
Millers' National Federation
of the resignation of R.E. McDonald, managing director of
the Long Range Program.
Sweeping adjustments in tariffs, the most extensive at one
time in the world's history, and
other provisions of the "General Agreement on Tariffs and
Trade," negotiated in Geneva,
announced last week by the
secretary-general of the United
Nations, Trygve Lie, and the Department of State, include some
provisions that will disappoint
mills of the United States in instances, but indications are that
flour exports from the United
States will be furthered.

Record highs in wheat futures
for the crop year and in life of
all deliveries, with December
at peaks that were exceeded
only once before in history, in
the spring of 1917, also all-time
highs for corn and most other
feed grains, were registered in
markets the past week.
Alfred E. Mallon, 55 years
of age, who started with the
Pillsbury Mills, Inc., as an
office boy in 1915 and rose to
the position of vice-president,
treasurer and member of the
board of directors, died at his
home in Minneapolis Nov. 29
