Grain-based Foods $4,199,171,000, while unit sales increased a little more than 2% to 1,696,930,000, according to SymphonyIRI. Leading the way was Kraft Foods, which through its Nabisco brand was able to grow dollar and unit sales 4% and 8%, respectively, in the period. Dollar sales of Kraft’s Oreo brand jumped 8% on a 9% gain in unit sales. And while the base Oreo brand did well during the period, sales of Oreo Double Stuf cookies struggled, as dollar and unit sales fell 10% and 8%, respectively. In mid-August, Kraft announced the nationwide launch of the Triple Double Oreo. The cookie has a layer of vanilla creme, a layer of chocolate creme and three chocolate wafers. One cookie has 100 calories and 4.5 grams of fat, and a package sells for around $4.19. The second-largest branded cookie company, Keebler Co., also performed well during the past year, as overall cookie dollar and unit sales rose 1% and 0.07%, respectively, behind several initiatives and indulgent innovation. “Keebler Fudge Shoppe continued to perform well, and we had strong innovation with Coconut Dreams, Jumbo Fudge Sticks and Mint Crème Middles,” John Bryant, president and c.e.o. of Kellogg, said during a July 28 conference call with analysts. With its expansive line of decadent cookies, Pepperidge Farm struggled through a difficult few years as consumers turned to private label products. But over the past year, the company is on the rebound as dollar sales gained 4% to nearly $300 million on a 4% increase in unit sales. Pepperidge in May added Milano Melts, a crisp cookie filled with chocolate crème. The cookies are available in two varieties: Dark Classic Crème and Chocolate Dark Classic Crème. Sweet goods solid in year The biggest news to transpire in the sweet goods market this past year was the $175 million acquisition of Philadelphia-based Tasty Baking Co. by Flowers Foods, Inc. With the purchase, Tasty has become a whollyowned subsidiary of Flowers and will be integrated into the company’s direct-store delivery segment. Flowers said the acquisition “creates a larger business with a complementary portfolio of high quality bakery products and deepens Flowers’ penetration of the estimated $4.4 billion snack cake category.” Overall, the news was positive for the bakery snacks category in 2011, as dollar sales rose 1% to $1,110,307,000 and unit sales increased 0.72% to 585,534,900 in the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, according to SymphonyIRI. Private label continued to drive growth, as dollar sales rose 9% in the period. Unit sales, though, fell 2% to 48,676,650. Category leading Hostess Brands, which battled a sharp drop in dollar sales for its 100 Calorie Packs brand in late 2010, showed strength in the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, as dollar sales were up 0.70% and unit sales rose nearly 6%. Hostess continued its strategy of partnering with popular movies to promote its sweet goods. As part of a partnership with Paramount Home Entertainment, Hostess in September introduced limited-edition Transformers-themed snack cakes featuring Optimus Prime, Shockwave, Bumblebee and Sentinel Prime from the movie, which was based on the Hasbro Transformers brand. Hostess also expanded its donuts line with the launch of Frosted Devil’s Food Cake Donettes. The devil’s food cake donuts are dipped in a chocolate-flavored coating and are available in four sizes: 10.5-oz Dunkie Bags, 11.25-oz Dunkie Bags, 12.2-oz Sweet Sixteen Dunkie Bags, and 3-oz single-serve sleeves. Hostess Donettes led the category with dollar sales of $122,417,200, according to SymphonyIRI. Overall, the donuts category posted dollar sales of $725,656,400 on unit sales of 298,081,300, up 1% and 0.78%, respectively, in the period ended Aug. 7.
