Dairy top selling yogurt in the United States with sales of $1,333 million in the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, equal to 30% of total yogurt sales, according to the SymphonyIRI Group data. The Dannon Co. was a strong second with sales of $1,206 million for the period, equal to 27% of the total. Yoplait yogurt sales decreased by 2% from a year earlier during the 52 weeks while Dannon sales increased 3%, although the dollar share decreased for both. Sales of private label yogurt totaled $408 million during the 52 weeks, equal to 9% of the U.S. total, down 5% from a year earlier. On a unit basis, Yoplait’s position as U.S. sales leader was even more commanding with sales of 1,539 million during the 52 weeks, equal to 38% of total U.S. sales, compared with second place Dannon with sales of 798 million units, equal to 20%. The average unit price for Yoplait was 87c, up 3c from a year earlier, while the average price for Dannon was $1.51, up 8c. Unit sales for both companies declined from a year ago. Private label yogurt had sales of 653 million units during the period, equal to 16% of the total. Private label unit sales declined 6% from a year earlier, with an average price of 62c, up 1c. Unit sales of ice cream totaled 1,173 million, down 4.5%, with an average price of $3.42, up 19c. Private label continued to lead the ice cream category with sales of $1,014 million during the 52 weeks, up 2% from a year earlier and equal to 25% of the total. In second place was Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream Holdings with sales of $883 million, equal to 22% of the total but down 4% from a year earlier. Good Humor/Breyers ice cream had sales of $558 million, down 7% from a year earlier and good for third place with 14% of total sales. Sales for Blue Bell Creameries Inc. were $327 million, equal to 8% of the total. Blue Bell ice cream sales increased 10% for the year, the largest percentage increase of any ice cream manufacturer. Private label had sales of 328 million units of ice cream during the 52-week period, equal to 28% of the total but down 5% from a year earlier. The average price was $3.09 per unit, up 22c from a year earlier. Sales of 242 million units for Dreyer’s was down 8% from a year earlier, still equaling 21% of the total, with an average price of $3.65, up 15% on the year. Good Humor/Breyers had sales of 161 million units, or 14% of the total, down 15% from a year earlier, with an average price of $3.47, up 28c. Blue Bell sales of 85 million units were up 3% from the prior 52-week period with an average price of $3.86, up 24c per unit. Sales of frozen novelties totaled $2,610 million during the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, 2011, up 3% from the prior 52-week period, according to SymphonyIRI.
