offer Mrs. Freshley's cinnamon-flavored
pastries. Flower's also unveiled a new look
for its Mrs. Freshley's line of snack cakes
and pastries, including packaging with a
bright modern design that complements a
new logo unveiled earlier this year.
A cookie comeback
After several sluggish years, the cookie
category has been rejuvenated behind renewed interest in indulgence. In the 52
weeks ended Sept. 8, 2013, dollar sales
for the category were $7,564,554,000,
up 4% from the same period a year ago,
according to I.R.I. Unit sales also have increased 4% during the same timeframe.
Mondelez International, which spun-off
from Kraft Foods last year, is the nation's
largest cookie maker. Two pleasant surprises for Mondelez during the past year
were Nabisco Nilla cookies and Nabisco
Snackwells cookies.
The company also is involved in a significant expansion project, with plans to
build the world's largest biscuit/cookie
plant. Mondelez will invest $350 million
in the construction of a new facility in
Mexico that will have five production lines
and will start operating in mid-2014.
"When its doors open in the second
half of 2014, this facility will support
biscuit growth across the Americas and
will enhance margins by utilizing stateof-the-art technologies that enable manufacturing at world class costs," said Irene
Rosenfeld, chairman and chief executive
officer for Mondelez.
The past year also has been a good one
for Kellogg, where a focus on the broader Keebler brand, and primarily Fudge
Shoppe, Chips Deluxe and Sandies, has
resulted in strong sales.
Pepperidge Farm, Inc., Norwalk, Conn.,
improved its pace on innovation in cookies, including Pepperidge Farm Milano
Slices Salted Pretzel cookies, Pepperidge
Farm Milano Melts in vanilla crème and
Pepperidge Farm Soft Baked cookies. In
addition, the company introduced Pepperidge Farm Milano Cookie Cake and
Chocolate Chunk Cookie Cake.
Non-traditional crackers spur growth
Elsewhere, the cracker category continues to grow behind an influx of crisps,
chips and pretzels.
In the 52 weeks ended Sept. 8, dollar sales in the cracker category totaled
$7,080,892,000, up 4% from a year
ago, according to I.R.I. Unit sales in the

Snyder's-Lance, Inc. has a robust new
product pipeline, including the Xtra Fulls
Toasty line of sandwich crackers that has
performed well since its launch earlier this
year. The company also expanded its Cracker Creations line with a new graham cracker
and launched its first jalapeño sandwich
cracker through the Captain Wafer's brand.
Kellogg is unveiling two new crackers,
Cheez-It Zings and Town House Pita, and
two varieties of Keebler Simply Made
cookies, which contain eight ingredients.
Pepperidge Farm on Oct. 7 celebrated
the completion of a $45 million expansion to the company's manufacturing
facility in Richmond, Utah. The expansion included the start-up of production
on a new Goldfish cracker line. In addition to the new Goldfish cracker line,
Pepperidge added new technology and
production capabilities to the site in
Richmond, the company's only manufacturing facility west of the Rocky Mountains. Additionally, 94,000 square feet
and improved facilities were added to the
already 225,000-square-foot site.
