forecast) up 7% from $18.53 paid
in 2012. The average price in 2014
was projected at $19.85 (midpoint of
$19.35@20.35 projection), about even
with 2013. Forecasts for both years
were raised from the department's
August projections based on higher
forecast prices for nonfat dry milk,
butter and cheese for 2013 and 2014.
Forecasts were raised from August
because of strong export demand and
tightening supplies, the U.S.D.A. said.
The U.S.D.A. forecast nonfat dry milk
prices to average $1.68½ a lb in 2013,
well above the $1.33 average in 2012
but slightly below $1.71 projected for
2014. Dry whey prices were forecast at
59½c a lb in 2013, little changed from
2012 and slightly below 60c projected
for next year. Cheese prices were
forecast at $1.76½ a lb in 2013, up
from $1.71 in 2012, but were projected
to decline to $1.72 in 2014. Butter
prices were forecast to average $1.52
a lb in 2013, down from $1.59 in 2012,
and were projected to firm slightly to
$1.53½ in 2014.
Continued firm prices for milk and
other products will keep pressure on
dairy processors, who have seen mixed
results in the past year, although
continued low prices for sugar and
cocoa, as well as for some fruits,
should benefit processors using those
ingredients in the manufacture of
chocolate milk, yogurt, ice cream and
other flavored products.
The nation's largest dairy processor,
Dallas-based Dean Foods, has undergone

in 2012 were up about 5% from 2011,
