keep their borders closed to U.S. beef exports," says Simons. "However, there are several reasons for optimism, including improvements in our sales margins even though
volume was down in the quarter; new opportunities in the Mexican market; and Swift's
continued leadership in food safety processes and technology."
The combined beef and pork segments of Swift are both benefiting from expansion
of value-added product offerings, including the introduction of the new La Herencia line
of beef and pork products targeted at Latino consumers. In addition, distribution of Swift
products has been expanded in Latin America through a licensing agreement with Specialty Foods Group.

OSHA issues poultry ergonomic
guidelines
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Employers and workers in the poultry processing industry
have a set of guidelines to help reduce ergonomic-related injuries, John Henshaw,
administrator of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, announced earlier this month. The Guidelines for Poultry Processing offers practical recommendations for employers to reduce the number and severity of musculoskeletal disorders
throughout the industry.
"Most poultry processors have made substantial efforts to address work-related
M.S.D.s," said Henshaw. "Those results demonstrate that methods are available to
better protect workers from injury during processing operations. The guidelines we're
announcing today will not hinder those efforts; on the contrary, they incorporate many
of those successful solutions.
"These are voluntary guidelines intended to build upon progress made in the poultry processing industry. We will continue working with those who've helped us deliver
this product - individual firms in the industry, trade and professional associations,
labor organizations, and the medical community - to reduce ergonomic-related injuries, which is always our principal goal."

Perdue Farms to shutter Maryland
plant this fall
SALISBURY, MD. - Perdue Farms has announced plans to close its processing plant
in Showell, Md., as part of its continued streamlining efforts. The plant, which employs
326 workers, will shut down Nov. 5 and production will move
to facilities near the company's headquarters in Salisbury
and in Georgetown, Del.
Company officials say workers at the plant will be offered
comparable positions at one of Perdue's other plants.
"With the number of new jobs the move will create
at the Salisbury plant - along with existing openings
at other Delmarva plants - we will be able to offer all
of our Showell associates continued employment," said Mike Roberts, president of Perdue's poultry group. The company also assured its 138
area poultry producers that it would continue to honor its contracts for birds raised for
poultry processing.
The Showell plant was purchased by Perdue in 1995 from Showell Farms. Running
only one shift per day, officials say the facility has been somewhat under utilized and
was in need of some substantial improvements. "It made good business sense to
move Showell's production to other facilities that didn't require the same costly upgrades," Roberts said.

Sanderson Farms
gets boost from
third quarter sales
LAUREL, MISS. - Sanderson Farms, Inc.,
reported results for the third quarter and
nine months ended July 31, 2004. Net
sales for the quarter were $293.9 million compared with $232.2 million for the
same period a year ago. For the quarter,
net income more than doubled to $33.9
million, compared with net income of
$15.4 million during the third quarter of
fiscal 2003.
Net sales for the first nine months of fiscal 2004 were $793.1 million compared
with $617.5 million for the same period of
fiscal 2003. Net income for the first nine
months of the year totaled $86.4 compared
with net income of $33.6 million.
"We are pleased with the positive momentum in our business through the third
quarter," says Joe Sanderson Jr., president and C.E.O. "Our strong financial results reflect the strength of our operations
as well as the significant overall improvement in the chicken market compared with
conditions a year ago. Consumer demand
for chicken continues to be favorable, and
Sanderson Farms is positioned to benefit
from this trend."
According to Sanderson, overall market prices for poultry products continued
to trend higher and reached record levels
during the third quarter before falling after the July 4 holiday. The market price for
boneless breast meat during the quarter
peaked at $2.56 per pound, but has since
dropped significantly to prices that are
hovering around $1.75 per pound.
"During the third quarter, we commenced
construction of Sanderson Farms' new
poultry processing complex in Colquitt and
Cook Counties, Georgia. As we announced
this past quarter, these facilities will comprise a state-of-the-art poultry complex
with capacity to process 1.2 million birds
per week. At full capacity, the complex will
employ approximately 1,700 people and require 130 contract growers."
