Sigma Alimentos to acquire Bar-S Foods
Mexican diversified food processor Sigma Alimentos, a division of ALFA, S.A.B.,
de C.V., plans to acquire processed-meat manufacturer Bar-S Foods, Phoenix. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed
and closing of the deal is subject to regulatory approvals.
"This is an important milestone in Sigma's growth
strategy," said Armando Garza Sada, chairman of the
board for ALFA. "With this acquisition, Sigma will become a meaningful player in the U.S. refrigerated processed
meats market with an important presence in the U.S. Hispanic market."
Bar-S Foods is a privately held company that processes
and markets processed meats throughout the United States.
The company operates three production plants and one distribution center in Oklahoma. Its product line includes franks, lunchmeats, bacon, dinner sausages and corn dogs, all sold under the Bar-S brand. In 2009,
Bar-S posted sales of $535 million and employed more than 1,600 people.
Sigma Alimentos' core business is in the Mexican refrigerated food business. Besides Mexico, Sigma is present in the U.S. Hispanic market, South
and Central America and the Caribbean. It operates 31 facilities and 144 distribution centers with product offerings of processed meats, cheese, yogurt
and other refrigerated products. In 2009, Sigma reported sales of $2,186 million and employed more than 30,000 people. ■

Brenda Barnes steps down from Sara Lee
Brenda Barnes is permanently stepping down as chairman and CEO of Downers Grove, Ill.-based Sara Lee Corp. as she continues to recover after having a
stroke on May 14.
"We fully support Brenda's decision to step down as chairman and CEO so
she can devote all of her time and energy toward improving her health," said
James Crown, chairman of the board. "She is a remarkable leader who is admired by those inside and outside of the Sara Lee family, and we fully understand and respect her decision. We will conduct a thorough process to identify
a CEO successor in a timely manner and look forward to sustaining the momentum begun under Brenda's leadership."
Barnes also has resigned from the board of directors and will not seek reelection at the company's annual stockholders meeting in October. During the
search for a new leader, Marcel Smits will continue to be interim CEO and Mark
Garvey will continue to be interim CFO. ■

Tyson to invest $9 million,
add jobs at N.C. plant
Springdale, Ark.-based Tyson Foods Inc. will invest $9 million in equipment
and add 60 jobs to its poultry tray-packing facility in Monroe, N.C. With the
additional jobs, the plant will employ more than 1,500 workers.
Monroe City Council members have approved an economic development
incentive grant not to exceed $171,120 to encourage this investment in Monroe, according to a release from Monroe Economic Development. The company has not disclosed a timetable for the expansion. ■
