Business Notes
Flav’s Fried Chicken opens in Iowa
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of FFC, Flav’s Fried Chicken, was held Jan. 24 in Clinton, Iowa. William Drayton Jr., better known as hip-hop and reality star Flavor Flav – Public Enemy’s hypeman – is a partner in his fi rst-time venture as a restaurateur, according to Y Music. Drayton says, opening a chain restaurant has been a life-long dream. A specially seasoned fried chicken recipe, ribs, greens and macaroni and cheese are featured on FFC’s menu. Dray ton par t nered wit h Nick Cimino to establish FFC, having already established a business relationship with Cimino’s brother, Peter, who owns Mama Cimino’s pizzeria in Las Vegas, which sells Flavor Flav’s 99-cent wings. Nick Cimino had the idea to create a restaurant anchored by Flav’s recipe, which distinguishes its fl avor from the competitions’ by fi rst seasoning the poultry fi rst and then allows it to season the flour used in the battering process. Drayton says he learned to cook by watching his mother and sisters cook at their family restaurant, the Soul Diner. He earned a culinary degree in in 1978 and has worked as a head cook at the Nassau County Court House and at Uniondale High School, both in Long Island, N.Y. ■

Bob Evans Farms names new CFO
Paul DeSantis, 46, has been named chief fi nancial officer, treasurer and assistant corporate secretary of Bob Evans Farms Inc. effective March 7. DeSantis will oversee the fi nancial reporting, investor relations and corporate fi nance functions. Prior to joining Bob Evans, DeSantis served as CFO and treasurer for Schulman Inc. since April 2006. He joined Schulman as vice president of finance in January 2006. DeSantis also spent four years in accounting and financial positions at The Kellogg Company, the world’s largest producer of cereals and other convenience foods.

Wendy’s/Arby’s Group considers selling Arby’s
Wendy’s/Arby’s Group is considering selling the Arby’s chain to focus more on Wendy’s, the company has announced. “Wendy’s currently has more than 6,500 restaurants in more than 20 countries and is one of the most attractive growth stories in the quick-service restaurant industry,” said Roland Smith, president and chief executive officer. “A pure-play, Wendy’s will enable us to focus all of our energies on growing the Wendy’s brand via new store growth both in North America and international markets and will accelerate same-store sales through the introduction of new dayparts and core menu innovation.” Arby’s is the second-largest quick-service sandwich chain in the United States with nearly 3,700 restaurants. But a higher price point compared with other similar restaurants has impacted Arby’s in recent years. “We believe the way to maximize shareholder value is to focus all of our management and fi nancial resources on continuing to build the Wendy’s brand,” said Nelson Peltz, chairman of Wendy’s/Arby’s group. “Arby’s is a good business, and we are making progress improving its performance, as evidenced by the 2.1 percent increase in company-operated same-store sales in the fourth quarter of 2010. However, despite Arby’s positive momentum, the reality is the Wendy’s brand, given its relative size and scope, is the key driver of shareholder return, and we believe we should focus on the execution of the compelling growth opportunities at Wendy’s.” ■

DeSantis earned his bachelor’s of science degree in marketing and international business from Georgetown Univ. He also holds a master’s of business administration degree with a concentration in fi nance from the Univ. of Michigan. Richard Green, who has served as interim chief fi nancial officer since Jan. 3, will continue in his existing role as chief risk and compliance officer. “We are thrilled to have someone with Paul’s wealth of fi nancial expertise join Bob Evans Farms,” said Steve Davis, chairman and CEO. “His experience in fi nancial reporting, strategic planning, treasury, tax and compliance, among others, will make him an essential component of our executive staff. We also thank Dick Green for his leadership during the interim period.” Bob Evans Farms Inc. owns and operates full-service restaurants under the Bob Evans and Mimi’s Cafe brand names. It is also a leading producer and distributor of pork sausage and a variety of complementary homestyle convenience food items under the Bob Evans and Owens brand names. ■
