Japan’s meat sector to buy, burn ‘radioactive’ beef
Recently, the international media has been abuzz about reports of radioactive beef being shipped from Japan in the aftermath of that nation’s earthquake and tsunami earlier this year. On July 26, Japanese Agriculture Minister Michihiko Kano said his country’s meat industry organizations will purchase all radioactive domestic beef that has been shipped from Japan to the marketplace in order to diminish mounting consumer fears plus provide fi nancial relief to affected livestock farmers of the contaminated beef, according to The Japan Times. Japan’s government will have its meat industry organizations buy all beef contaminated with radioactive cesium surpassing the government limit of 500 becquerels per kilogram, and they will in turn seek to recoup their costs from Tokyo Electric Power Co. These organizations will also pay the storage fees for beef not exceeding the radiation limit but were banned from being shipped. Japanese meat organizations will also provide fi nancial support to livestock farmers in Fukushima Prefecture by paying ¥50,000 (US$640) for each head of beef cattle they raise, the ministry said. The ministry is also considering aiding farmers in other prefectures who fed cesium-tainted hay to their cattle. This plan directs the organizations to seek compensation to cover all of their costs from TEPCO. ■

Allen Family Foods assets go to highest bidder
Harim USA Ltd., an affiliate of a South Korean poultry firm Harim Holdings Co. Ltd., was the winning bidder in a bankruptcy auction for the assets of Allen Family Foods on July 25. The winning company submitted the highest bid for what amounted to nearly all of Allen’s assets, said Richard Robinson, an attorney representing Harim USA Ltd. The auction lasted approximately 12 hours.

In June, Allen Family Foods fi led for bankruptcy protection with a purchase agreement in hand from competitor Mountaire Farms that served as the initial bid. But Mountaire said on July 26 it had “discontinued” its efforts to purchase almost all of Allen’s assets. According to bankruptcy fi lings, Mountaire’s bid going into the auction was for $30 million, with an additional amount for inventory of up to $38 million. Objecting in June to proposed break-up fees, a bankruptcy court trustee put the likely purchase price at $53 million. Delaware-based Mountaire said after the auction it plans to move forward with its plan to expand operations and add employees – just not by acquiring Allen-owned facilities. Bob Turley, Allen’s CEO, said Harim representatives indicated they would use all the facilities they plan to acquire as opposed to shutting some down. More than 400 people are employed at Allen’s Talbot County processing plant and about 70 work at its Dorchester County rendering plant. ■
